U Committees Need Stronger Student Voices

Student representatives sit on many committees formed to govern the U, but some appointed students fail to attend the meetings and neglect their responsibilities. The U has 59 committees responsible for overseeing everything from campus health to student behavior, and 30 of these committees have students sitting on them.

Business School Strives for Diversity

After donating $200 to the U chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, Business School Dean Jack Brittain addressed the group about diversifying campus Wednesday. "I'm humbled to be here because we are not doing enough to diversify our school," he said to the 15 members present.

U Donates Land Near Stadium For Olympic Cauldron Fountain

Olympic and U officials announced the creation of an Olympic Cauldron Park to be built on the southwest corner of Rice-Eccles Stadium on Wednesday. The park would showcase the 72-foot tall cauldron built which held the Olympic and Paralympic flame for the duration of the 2002 Games.

2nd Space Tourist Cleared for Trip

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fl.?Another rich adventure-seeker is headed to the international space station. This time, though, the astronauts on board won't have to baby-sit him. To the relief of the three men living on the space station, NASA has given its blessing to the visit by South African millionaire Mark Shuttleworth, who is part of a crew of cosmonauts due to lift off aboard a Russian rocket Thursday from Kazakhstan.

Earthquake Hits Central Balkans

GNJILANE, Yugoslavia?An earthquake jolted parts of the central Balkans on Wednesday, knocking down a minaret and killing one man. Sixty other people were injured, a U.N. spokesman said. The quake's preliminary magnitude was measured at 5.1, with its epicenter some 175 miles south of Belgrade, near the town of Vitina in the southern province of Kosovo, said Slavica Radulovic of the Seismological Institute of Serbia.

Cardinals Release Abuse Statement

VATICAN CITY?American cardinals and top bishops expressed regret Wednesday for failing to prevent the sex abuse scandal that has engulfed the Roman Catholic Church in the United States. The statement came in a letter to American priests released as church leaders and top Vatican officials in a marathon session worked on a final statement with guidelines on how to deal with sexual abuse by the clergy.

Leavitt Urged to Declare Drought

SALT LAKE CITY?Gov. Mike Leavitt said he will follow the recommendation of the state drought committee and declare an official drought for most of Utah, making farmers and ranchers eligible for federal low- or no-interest loans. The drought committee said Tuesday that most southern, central and eastern Utah counties were eligible for drought status, with scattered parts of western and northern Utah not far behind.

Games Created $56 Million Overflow

Even After Season, Ute Gymnasts Still Winning

The 2002 postseason ended last week for the U gymnastics squad with a fourth-place finish at the NCAA Championships in Tuscaloosa, Ala. However, that hasn't stopped select gymnasts from receiving a number of non-gymnastics accolades. Ute senior Shannon Bowles, the 2002 North Central Regional Gymnast of the Year and nine-time All-American for the Red Rocks, received the U's Bud Jack Award at a banquet honoring senior Ute athletes.
