Israeli Troops Leave Most West Bank Cities

JENIN, West Bank?With Israeli forces gone from most Palestinian cities in the West Bank, Prime Minister Ariel Sharon declared Sunday that Israel has completed the latest stage of its "war on terrorism" and will turn to new tactics as it presses the campaign.

Scene Cleared of Amtrack Accident

CRESCENT CITY, Fla.?The track where an Amtrak Auto Train derailed in a mess of mangled cars and rails was cleared Sunday, allowing the first trains to pass through this northern Florida town since the accident. The original tracks were torn out by Thursday's derailment, which killed four people and injured over 150.

Lawmakers Except One Veto Override

SALT LAKE CITY?Legislative leaders of both parties say they expect Wednesday's veto override session to take no more than an hour. Gov. Mike Leavitt vetoed nine bills that were passed during the Legislature's 2002 regular session. In post-session polling, only one appeared to have the votes necessary for an override.

Democrats Look to 2004 Election Fund

WASHINGTON?Potential Democratic presidential contenders are competing to succeed former President Bill Clinton as the party's "fund raiser-in-chief," hoping their efforts on behalf of other candidates will pay off in 2004. House Minority Leader Dick Gephardt of Missouri has raised at least $15 million to help House Democrats in the fall election.

Student Councils Get More Funding

Only with considerable amendments did the controversial bill which would have cut the Presenter's Office budget almost by half pass the Student Senate. But the Presenter's Office hefty budget remains intact. Sen. Sam Swenson, humanities, originally drafted the bill, intending to divert money from the Presenter's Office and into the hands of college student councils, which would then use the money for student groups and functions indigenous to their own respective colleges.

Tennis: Men Roll, Women End Year

In an easy match for the U men's tennis team, the Utes defeated Portland State, 7-0 on Thursday. The Utes move to 14-10 on the year. It was the final home match for seniors David Mercier, Corrie Scheepers and Nik Yip. Mercier only played in doubles competition to rest his injured elbow, and he and Yip defeated Kapil Desai and Mark Simpson 8-3.

U Commits 500 Acres to a Wildlife Preserve

In an effort to protect and maintain natural habitat surrounding the U, President Bernie Machen and Red Butte Gardens have officially committed nearly 500 acres of open land to a new wildlife preserve. The U will restrict any future development or expansion in the area, to be called Heritage Preserve.
