American Indians Celebrate Heritage

Throughout the week, Native American jewelry, crafts and movies have filled the Union as part of Native American Awareness Week. The 30th annual celebration, "Weaving Our Educational Path," has focused on the traditions and customs of American Indians. "It's important to bring about awareness about Native American issues on campus, and to say that we have been here, we are here and we will always be here," said Wilma Tyner, Intertribal Student Association adviser.

Students, Tutoring Get Bigger Piece of the Pie

Child care, the tutoring center and student groups stand to get big funding increases next year. The Student Senate approved a draft of the budget Thursday that gave child care $8,000 more, increased the Tutoring Center's funds by $16,000 and budgeted nearly $159,000 for student groups, up from $134,555 the groups received last year.

Project Youth Brings Elementary Students to College

Cheerleaders, red and white balloons and nearly 6,000 screaming sixth-graders filled the Hunstman Center Thursday afternoon. The elementary students visited campus as part of the Bennion Community Service Center's Project Youth, now in its 13th year. "Besides instilling the desire for higher education, Project Youth encourages the pursuit of dreams and helps kids envision a bigger picture for their lives," said AnnMarie Allen, project coordinator and former senior class president and student body presidential hopeful.

U ROTC Branches Show Their Colors

For U ROTC cadets, the Tri Service Ceremony marks one of the most important and formal gatherings of the year. Held yesterday, the end of the year ceremony honors cadets in all branches of the military for their accomplishments. The ceremony is traditionally held at Stillwell Field or Fort Douglas, but due to yesterday's inclement weather, the site of the ceremonies was relocated to HPER East.

Baseball Poised for Big MWC Weekend

Another sweep would be ideal for the U baseball team, and it will have an ideal chance this weekend, as it takes on the UNLV Rebels, who are tied for the worst record in the conference, at 5-10. The conference standings could swing one way or another as the first- and second-place teams, San Diego State and BYU, will face off in a three game series, along with a made-up suspended game.

Track and Field, Golf Teams Get Weekend Action

The U track and field team has had success throughout the meets it has competed in, and the team will now head to three different tournaments this weekend. A few of the elite runners will head to the Pomona Pitzer Invitational, while some of the other runners will head to the Mt.

UVSC Lures Hunsaker to Coach Team

After winning MWC Coach of the Year honors a year ago for his role in leading the U men's basketball team to a share of the conference championship, despite the absence of Rick Majerus, it was widely speculated that Dick Hunsaker would be leaving to take a full time head coaching position elsewhere.

U Gymnasts Make Super Six With a Session Victory

For the first time in the 10 years of the Super Six qualifying format, the U gymnastics team claimed first place in its session. After posting a team score of 196.775, the Red Rocks advanced to the Super Six finals tonight at 7 p.m. CDT. The winner of the Super Six will be crowned NCAA Champion.

Residents Oppose Monument Status

CASTLE DALE?Many residents in this central Utah town don't want to see the San Rafael Swell turned into a national monument despite the plan's backing from state and local leaders. Most of the 150 residents who attended a town meeting with Gov. Mike Leavitt on Wednesday opposed creating the 620,000-acre San Rafael Western Heritage National Monument.
