Law Prof and Shurtleff Shoot It Out Over Guns on Campus Debate

Putting his mouth where his litigation is, Attorney General Mark Shurtleff came to campus yesterday to debate the issue of guns on campus with Law Professor John Flynn. Last December, Shurtleff said, as a public university, the U was violating state law by prohibiting students and employees with permits to carry concealed weapons from bringing their guns to campus.

Chrony Earns High Marks in Contests

Though The Chronicle has received considerable attention for its involvement in the Olympic and Paralympic village newspapers this year, the paper has also distinguished itself critically. Announced last week, The Chronicle dominated the Utah News Photographers Association Student Photojournalism Competition, taking 12 of the 16 awards in four different categories.

Netters Probable to Go Indoors Vs Portland St

In the last home match at the U for seniors David Mercier, Corrie Scheepers and Nik Yip, the U men's tennis team will host Portland State, most likely at the Eccles Tennis Center today. It was scheduled to be at the Canyon Racquet Club, but since Mother Nature has had different plans as of late, the match will likely be moved to the Eccles Tennis Center.

WASHINGTON?A flood of income tax payments has helped ease pressure on the national debt ceiling and allowed the Treasury Department to begin restoring money shifted out of government employee pension accounts to avert a government default, officials said Wednesday.

Nurses to Vote on Joining Union

SALT LAKE CITY?Nurses at Salt Lake Regional Medical Center will vote to decide whether to join the United American Nurses union. The National Labor Relations Board office in Denver may rule as early as this week on a Feb. 1 petition for an election. More than two-thirds of the hospital's registered nurses signed the petition.

Archaeology Find Reveals Mummies

WASHINGTON?Thousands of ancient Inca mummies, some bundled together in small groups with their possessions, have been discovered beneath a shantytown near Lima, Peru. Archaeologists say the find may solve some of the mysteries surrounding the Inca civilization.

Angel of Death’ Is Sentenced to Life

LOS ANGELES?A former respiratory therapist who once called himself the "Angel of Death" was sentenced Wednesday to life in prison for killing six elderly patients with drug injections. In addition to six life terms, Superior Court Judge Lance Ito gave Saldivar wo 15 years to life for the attempted murder of Jean Coyle, who appeared in court and told how she was almost killed by a drug injected into her intravenous tube.

Senate Decides K-UTE’s Fate Tonight

Tiffin Brough is an Asian Studies major who has been at the U for four years. Now in her senior year, she says that without K-UTE she never would have applied to the U. "When I started applying for colleges, I made sure each one had a radio station. Without K-UTE, I wouldn't have come here," Brough said.

Olympic Torch to Be Displayed in Union

To preserve a piece of the Olympics and record the U's involvement in the Games, the Union will soon display one of the torches that carried the Olympic Flame. The Salt Lake Organizing Committee donated the torch to President Bernie Machen for his involvement?he served as a member of SLOC's board of trustees.

Worldwide Cultures Showcased at Event Tonight

Food, music and fashion shows will fill the Union as international students celebrate their own and others' cultures. Beginning this afternoon, International Night, hosted by the International Student Council, will encompass all cultures on campus, including Americans.
