U Baseball Drops Opener to Y

In front of the second largest crowd in BYU baseball history (2,251), Cougar starter Jeff Mousser struck out 10 in tossing 8.1 innings as the Y topped the Utes 5-2 in the first of a three-game weekend series. Utah drops to 19-15 overall, 4-6 in Mountain West Conference play.

Utes Fall to Ranked Pacific

The drought continues for the U softball team. The Utes lost to No. 18 Pacific 10-1 at Ute Field Thursday, extending the streak to 26 straight losses against ranked teams. The loss gives the Utes a 13-29 record, and the Tigers improve to 25-12. After a scoreless first inning, the two teams each scored one run in the second inning.

Men’s Tennis Set to Play UNM, Air Force

The preseason is over. The past record means pretty much nothing. Play for the U men's tennis team now begins. The team takes its 11-7 record to Albuquerque to take on both New Mexico and Air Force this weekend. The Utes bring in a three-game winning streak.

Women Netters Look to Rebound After Losses

Barely being defeated by New Mexico (4-3) was the epitome of how the U women's tennis team has competed all season. Losing the leads in matches has been the norm for the U players. Last week, one match for the Utes could have swung the balance. Ute Allison Hansen possessed a 4-3 lead before losing it to Courtney Choate.

U Gymnasts Head to Regionals in Oregon

The Utah gymnastics team couldn't have entered the postseason on a better note. The Red Rocks are coming off a herculean school record 198.425 team score, the highest score in women's gymnastics this year as well as the second highest score in NCAA history.

Election Committee Fines Elevation $60

The Impact Party thinks Elevation got off easy Thursday when the Elections Committee dismissed one grievance against the party and levied a petty fine for the other. Impact filed two grievances Thursday, one accused Elevation of violating U policy by sending out unsolicited bulk email, the other of violating residence hall policy when campaigning door to door in student apartments.

Defeated Allen Feels ‘Great’

Since the student body primary election less than one week ago, Elevation candidates worked hard to close the 276 vote gap with opponent Impact. In the end, the spread shrunk, but Elevation still didn't pull the votes needed to win the final election. "We worked hard, harder than anybody else," said Colter Hammer, Elevation vice presidential candidate.

Impact Dominates Races in Senate, General Assembly

The Impact Party dominated the race for General Assembly and Student Senate as well as winning the top executive offices. Eight victorious senators and 35 new members of the Assembly ran with the Impact Party, while Elevation elected only six senators and 11 members of the Assembly.

Crews Remove ‘Torchbearer’

U students and faculty bid a final farewell to the 2002 Winter Olympic Games as workers take down remnants of the Olympic banner that covered the Social and Behavioral Science Tower for more than four months. The banner, known as "The Torchbearer," will be disassembled in six separate panel sections over the next few days.

English Hires Film Grad in Tough Year

English Professor Alice Maurice knows she is lucky to have a job. "The academic job market is not very good and hasn't been very good for a long time," she said. Maurice received a doctorate in English from Cornell University in January and landed a teaching job at the U just months later.
