Primary Elections May Be Delayed

SALT LAKE CITY?This year's primary election may be moved from June to September because of the state's pending census case before the U.S. Supreme Court. State House GOP leaders will ask Gov. Mike Leavitt to call a special legislative session later this month to push back this year's June 25 primary.

Baseball Begins Series at BYU

After a big series win over San Diego State last weekend, the U baseball team is riding high, improving to 19-14 overall, 4-5 MWC and moving up the conference standings. Now the Utes get a chance to climb further still, as they begin a three-game series today in Provo against BYU.

Afghanistan Fights Opium Production

ANKARA, Turkey?Afghanistan's Interim Prime Minister Hamid Karzai welcomed Turkey's plans to take over command of the international peacekeeping force and said Thursday the two countries would also cooperate in the fight against the production of opium. Karzai arrived in Turkey as his government pledged to end the cultivation of poppies, a major source of income in Afghanistan and a huge problem for Turkey?where most of the opium is smuggled through.

Van Crash Kills 5 From Day Care

MEMPHIS, Tenn.?A driver lost control of a day-care van on an interstate and crashed Thursday, killing the driver and four children and critically injuring two other youngsters. The van, which belonged to Tippy Toes Learning Academy, crashed about four miles from the day care center.
