Softball Completes Road Trip

In beginning conference play on the road, the U softball team was expecting to get where it thought it ought to be. The Utes came home .500. Battling San Diego State and UNLV last weekend, the Utes won one game and lost one game from each doubleheader. Against SDSU, the Aztecs came out roaring in the first game, downing the Utes 9-1 after six innings.

We Can Overcome ASUU Election Silliness

Citizen Service Act Cuts Work-study Benefits

Bush's proposed Citizen Service Act of 2002 would mandate 50 percent of federal work-study funds be spent on employing students in community-service jobs.

OB/GYN Dept 5th in Nation in NIH Funding

The department of obstetrics and gynecology is ranked fifth in the nation in research funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH). "We are delighted by and proud of our current standing," said Eli Adashi, professor and chair of the department. These grants total between $4 million and $5 million annually.

Nursing Students Become Volunteers

Sixteen first-semester U College of Nursing students have volunteered to head up Caring in Action projects. These projects get the students involved in a collaboration with organizations in the community outside of school, according to Sandy Taylor, spokeswoman for the college.

Weekend Warriors: ROTC Prepares Cadets for Camp

Pressure. Army ROTC leaders designed the whole weekend as a way to stress the cadets. Their ruck sacks placed pressure on their shoulders and backs, their heavy kevlar helmets weighed down their heads and the stare of fourth year ROTC cadet Ryan Canady provided the finishing touch.

Debates Offered at $400 a Candidate

SALT LAKE CITY?One-time senatorial contender Greg Hawkins is proposing debates among Republican congressional hopefuls, for which they would have to pay a $400 "entrance fee." He said he would shoulder the cost of mailing invitations, renting school auditorium space and hosting the events.

Rape Attempted by Man During Flight

BOSTON?A man was arraigned Monday on charges that he sexually assaulted a woman during an airline flight to Boston from Dallas. Deepak Jahagirdar, 51, of Scottsdale, Ariz., pleaded innocent to charges of rape, assault with intent to rape and interfering with aircraft operations, said David Procopio, spokesman for the Suffolk District Attorney's office.

Synagogue Burned in South France

MARSEILLE, France?A fire destroyed a synagogue in this Mediterranean port city at the close of a weekend that brought a rash of attacks targeting Jews in France, police said Monday. No injuries were reported. The blaze broke out late Sunday night at the Or Aviv temple, shortly after police had completed a patrol as part of heightened security measures at Jewish religious sites following a series of attacks recently in France.
