Students Could Bare the Brunt Economic Problems

Fiscal analysts suggest the best solution to the state's higher education budget problems is a steep increase in tuition. Analysts presented the 2003 fiscal year budget recommendations to the Higher Education Appropriations Subcommittee Friday. The analysts suggest students pay a 16 percent tuition increase to give institutions additional funding.

The wining streak continued for the U women's tennis team, as it defeated in-state rival Weber State on Friday, 4 3. Utah has now won its first three matches of the season, and Sheri Esrock continues to dominate every player she faces in singles competition.

Baseball Loses Two Straight

Given that this is the time of the season when a coach is experimenting with what types of lineups to bring in, the U baseball team competed well against the Cal Poly Mustangs. The Utes won the season opener against the Mustangs 6-4 as Jason Wylie lived up to expectations by winning his first start of the season.

Ute Swimmers Miss Divers in MWC Contests

The U's swimming teams went against both Wyoming and Air Force this weekend, but came home with just one victory. The men swam well, despite fighting a 32-point deficit in both meets for not carrying a diver on the roster. The U's last diver, Claine Andrew, quit the team for lack of time, but with no diver, the U automatically loses those points, which creates a very large hole for the swimmers to climb out of.

Men’s Tennis Sweeps First Pair of Matches

For the first time ever, the U men's tennis team competed against two teams in one day. It just so happened to be the Utes' first two competitions of the season. The team downed both Montana State and in-state rival Utah State by identical 6 1 scores. "I felt like the guys fought pretty hard and did a good job," said head coach F.

U Requests $75M for New Building Projects

With an eye on bolstering Utah's slumping economy, legislators looked favorably on two U construction projects Friday. Administrators presented their plans to totally revamp the Marriott Library and construct a Health Sciences Classroom Building to the legislative committee in charge of new buildings.
