U Employees Asked to Give to Family Fund

It's not quite Christmas, but at the U, 'tis the season for giving. The University of Utah Development Office is sending out thousands of pamphlets asking employees to donate to the U as part of an annual in house donations drive called the Family Fund. The money can be given to the department or auxiliary of the donors' choice, said Jeff Driggs, director of Annual Givings.

U Offers Free Diabetes Screening

It is estimated that in the United States nearly 16 million people, or 6 percent of the population, have diabetes. About one-third of those are thought to be undiagnosed, and those receiving treatment often do not follow the required regiment to control the disease.

Majerus Displeased With U’s Sloppiness

The Utah men's basketball team finished its two-game exhibition schedule unblemished. But, as always, coach Rick Majerus isn't content with his troops heading into Friday's regular season opener. Utah didn't look especially sharp in either of its wins over EA Sports All-Stars SW or the London Leopards.

Anthrax Scare a ‘False Alarm’

An anthrax scare hit University of Utah property over the weekend. Eleven employees from Idaho Technology, a biotech company located in Research Park, visited University Hospital for testing and treatment for anthrax exposure, according to Jason Burgess, hospital spokesman.

U Accelerates Its Emergency Plans

When Marty Shaub started her career in Environmental Health and Safety at the University of Utah in 1988, the department was little known and underutilized. Called the Department of Public Safety then, it reported to campus police. With emergency management on everyone's minds now, the department's role has risen in prominence from just overseeing worker safety and environment protection.

Caution Closes HPER Pool

As a precaution against possible contamination, the College of Health closed its pool in the HPER complex Monday morning. This came as a result of a swimming class student who reported possibly having been infected with a parasite called cryptosporidium. The parasite causes cramping, abdominal pain and watery diarrhea, said Michele Johnson, assistant director of the University of Utah's Environmental Health and Safety department There is nothing wrong with the U's water, said College of Health Dean John Dunn, but the student may have contaminated it.
