Anthrax Scare a ‘False Alarm’

An anthrax scare hit University of Utah property over the weekend. Eleven employees from Idaho Technology, a biotech company located in Research Park, visited University Hospital for testing and treatment for anthrax exposure, according to Jason Burgess, hospital spokesman.

It seems a bit peculiar that a university's administration would hit up its employees and solicit them to donate to?themselves? But that's what's going on right now at the University of Utah. The practice, apparently, is not a new one. Every year, when the U becomes destined to exceed its budget (thanks in large part to a state legislature whose priorities lie anywhere other than adequately funding higher education), the campus administrators send out some glossy pamphlets to professors, faculty members and other assorted staffers asking them to act as de-facto benefactors toward the university.

Miami Herald humor columnist Dave Barry has been running a tongue-in-cheek U.S. presidential campaign for years. As president, Barry promises (among other things) to return from vacation within 100 days of being elected to check the mail. One of his campaign's underlying philosophies is: "ENOUGH with presidents playing golf." Obviously, Barry says nothing serious about becoming president?he gets paid to say humorous things. However, Barry's campaign Web site has one message that university goers everywhere could benefit from hearing.

Residence Halls Hold AIDS Event

College-age students have the highest rate of contracting AIDS in the United States. Providing free HIV testing, the Bennion Community Service Center, Student Health Service and the Residence Halls Association hosted the Condom Games at the Heritage Center Tuesday. "It's important for students to get HIV testing," said Megan Nibley, director of the campus AIDS project for the Bennion Center. "Even if the student isn't tested positive, going through the process and visualizing having HIV makes them more careful the next time."

SALT LAKE CITY?A Sierra Club study on air pollution and public transportation released Tuesday harshly assessed Utah's efforts to get people out of their cars and into buses and trains. Utah spent $576 per person on highway construction and maintenance in 1998, the highest per capita spending of any state for that year.

ALGIERS, Algeria?Rescuers sifted through caked mud Tuesday, seeking survivors of flooding and mudslides that killed nearly 600 people in the Algerian capital. More rain was in the forecast. The official death toll stood at 579. Some Algiers newspapers estimated deaths could climb as high as 1,000 when devastated areas are searched.
