Gymnasts Lose at No. 5 Michigan

A loss in never exactly encouraging, but Utah gymnastics coach Greg Marsden saw something a little reassuring in his team's 197.025 to 196.175 loss at No. 5 Michigan Friday night, Utah's fourth consecutive road meet. "The good news is we haven't faced a team we can't beat if we just hit our routines," Marsden said.

Utes Hire New Wide Receivers Coach

Utah football coach Ron McBride said he was going to make a commitment to bolster the team's offense this offseason. Thus far, he's been true to his word. On National Letter of Intent Day, he used three-quarters of the team's 24 available scholarships on offensive players.

Women Win Final Home Game

When the Utah and Air Force women's basketball teams met up last Saturday, neither was incredibly sharp offensively in the opening half. The Utes went scoreless for 6:08, while the Falcons endured a stretch of 5:33 without a point. The difference? In Utah's cold period, Air Force scored just 5 points; conversely, when AFA went quiet, the U ran off 14 straight to put the game out of reach.

Business Slow for U Restaurants

With Olympic throngs crowding downtown Salt Lake City, many restaurants hoped to cash in?but those Olympic dreams are quickly fading. Many restaurants surrounding the U have found canceled reservations and empty seats. "There are a lot of negative effects on small businesses as a result of the Games," said Karen Gladstone, president of Brumby's Bistro.

Majerus-Less Utes Need All 40 Minutes Versus Air Force

The Utah men's basketball team played without the big man on the sideline against Air Force Saturday night, and the team's play reflected that of a team without its instructor. Head coach Rick Majerus missed the game with a bronchial infection, and assistant Dick Hunsaker filled in like he did for 30 of 31 games last season.

For junior Theresa Kulikowski, Friday's meet at Utah State was a glorious return to the all-around after a two-year absence. However, for her gymnastics comrades, competing in their third straight away meet due to the Olympic madness, it wasn't so glorious?but it was a 196.

Union Hosts Ukrainian NOC Welcome

Gathering in a candle-lit Panorama Room, the Ukrainian National Olympic Committee welcomed its members and athletes Tuesday night. "On behalf of Ukraine, we welcome you to share the spirit of the Olympics," said NOC President Ivan Fedorenko through a translator.

Football Signs 24 Players to Letters of Intent

Just two months removed from a bowl victory over national power USC that pushed its final record to 8-4 overall, the Utah football team is now focusing its efforts on reloading for the future. On National Letter of Intent Day on Feb. 6, the Utes added 24 athletes to their team, seven from the junior college ranks and 17 from high schools concentrated primarily in the West.

Kofoed Drafted by Pro Soccer Team

More than 120 players applied for the draft of the eight-team Women's United Soccer League, but only 32 were selected. Utah's Amy Kofoed was one of the lucky ones. Kofoed became the second player from the Utes to join the WUSA when she was selected with the first pick of the fourth round (25th overall) by the San Diego Spirit.
