Briefs: U women’s tennis to compete in nationals today

Last month, the season came to a closer for the U women's tennis team. That is, for everyone not named Elizabeth Ferris and Emily Kwok. The two combine to make up the No. 25 ranked doubles team in the country and that partnership will represent the U in the NCAA Doubles Championships today through May 26 in Tulsa, Okla.

Briefs: Ute track team takes 6th in MWC championship

For the third straight year, the Utah track and field team ended the Mountain West Conference Championship with a sixth-place finish. Over the two days of the championship on May 16 and 17, the Utes posted 85 points and had five members of the team qualify for Regionals.

Utah softball star Diana Phillips was named to the 2008 All-West Region team this week by the National Softball Coaches Association, adding an exclamation point to her senior season and her outstanding career at the U. "It's pretty cool," said Phillips. Phillips was also named to the All-West Region Team following the 2007 season.

U ranks 8th with EPA

The U purchased almost 37 million kilowatt-hours of renewable wind power last year, offsetting carbon emissions equal to 5,000 automobiles and earning eighth place in the Environmental Protection Agency's College and University Green Power Challenge. "(The) EPA applauds the University of Utah for their leadership in green power purchasing," said EPA administrator Stephen Johnson in a statement.

Utes to face Lobos in MWC tournament

The U baseball team got the combined benefit of its own 9-3 win and a 6-2 loss by No. 3 seed San Diego State, meaning the Utes will avoid top-seed TCU for at least one more day and will face New Mexico instead. With the way the double-elimination Mountain West Conference tournament works, TCU was guaranteed the lower-seeded winner from Tuesday night's tournament opening doubleheader.

Trail rerouted for museum construction

The Bonneville Shoreline Trail, a popular Wasatch Mountain Range hiking path that extends south from the Idaho border to Nephi, will be rerouted for the duration of construction on the new Utah Museum of Natural History beginning in August. The museum, which is deciding where local residents will be able to access the trail, has decided to temporarily turn a one-lane road into an alternate trail.

$15 million donated for new natural history museum

Construction on a new Utah Museum of Natural History will begin this summer thanks to a $15 million donation from Rio Tinto, the parent company of Kennecott Copper. "We are thrilled to share this exciting contribution to the continuing, long relationship with the museum and the U," said Bret Clayton, the chief executive of Rio Tinto.

Animal rights protesters arrested

Three animal rights protesters were arrested April 20 for picketing outside a U researcher's home--a violation of a new Salt Lake City ordinance requiring demonstrators to stay 100 feet away from a private residence. This is the first violation of the new ordinance.

U tightens medical privacy policies

Officials in several U health science facilities are working to toughen enforcement of privacy policies and procedures after an audit in October 2007 revealed several key vulnerabilities in employees' ability to protect patient information. For two months in late 2007, four auditors in the U Internal Audit Department monitored strengths and weaknesses in protecting private patient information at different locations in the University Hospital, the Huntsman Cancer Hospital, the Huntsman Cancer Institute, the Moran Eye Center and the Orthopaedic Center.

New ASUU leadership inaugurated

When Jon Hayes first set foot on the U campus five years ago for a high school science day, he wasn't sure what the gigantic, unfamiliar place would have in store for him. Patrick Reimherr said that when he first arrived at the U as a freshman, he too did not feel like he had a place to belong--a spot in the U to call home.
