Chronicle receives national Mark of Excellence awards

The Daily Utah Chronicle has been recognized as the second overall best daily college newspaper in the country. The Society of Professional Journalists announced May 19 that The Chronicle and six individual staff members have been selected to receive national Mark of Excellence awards.

The American dream used to be the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. People came to America in hopes of living out their own "rags to riches" story. Today, the American dream of 81 percent of people ages 18-25 is to be rich and famous, according to a Pew Research Center poll released in 2007.

Utes to face Lobos in MWC tournament

The U baseball team got the combined benefit of its own 9-3 win and a 6-2 loss by No. 3 seed San Diego State, meaning the Utes will avoid top-seed TCU for at least one more day and will face New Mexico instead. With the way the double-elimination Mountain West Conference tournament works, TCU was guaranteed the lower-seeded winner from Tuesday night's tournament opening doubleheader.

Briefs: Sitterud named assistant to women’s basketball

Lana Sitterud spent three of her four years on the U women's basketball team as a captain and then spent the last two years as a graduate assistant. On May 13th, Sitterud was named the team's newest assistant. "Lana is a bright, young star in the coaching ranks right now," said head coach Elaine Elliott.

Briefs: U women’s tennis to compete in nationals today

Last month, the season came to a closer for the U women's tennis team. That is, for everyone not named Elizabeth Ferris and Emily Kwok. The two combine to make up the No. 25 ranked doubles team in the country and that partnership will represent the U in the NCAA Doubles Championships today through May 26 in Tulsa, Okla.

New museum supports sustainability

Just one month after U President Michael Young joined over 500 of his peers by signing the American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment, the U unveiled plans for its most ambitious "green" building to date. Dubbed the Rio Tinto Center, the new home for the Utah Museum of Natural History will join a short list of buildings in the state to receive a gold-level LEED certification.

Trail rerouted for museum construction

The Bonneville Shoreline Trail, a popular Wasatch Mountain Range hiking path that extends south from the Idaho border to Nephi, will be rerouted for the duration of construction on the new Utah Museum of Natural History beginning in August. The museum, which is deciding where local residents will be able to access the trail, has decided to temporarily turn a one-lane road into an alternate trail.

Delayed construction increases UMNH costs

The new Utah Museum of Natural History's price tag could have prevented its construction, and if attendance does not increase as much as has been projected, it may not stay open in its full capacity. The new museum will cost about $98 million to build. Enough contributions have been raised and construction is scheduled to begin this August.

U sister school in China hit by earthquake

The Confucius Institute at the U will donate $3,000 to help relief efforts in the Sichuan province of China, where the U's sister school, Sichuan University, is located. Fusheng Wu, director of the Confucius Institute, said $1,000 will be donated directly to Sichuan University to aid with repair efforts.
