Two new microscopes that cost the U more than $1 million will be available for local businesses to use for a fee. The U will host an open house Thursday to demonstrate the two electron microscopes, which can be used for nanometer scale research, to business leaders and members of the community.

Brunner bares all

By By Cody Brunner April 22, 2008
Ordinarily, I wouldn't go out of my way to call people out or tell them they need to seriously adjust the way they do things. Seeing as how this might be the last column I ever write, though, I feel obligated to come clean. Over the past two years, I've had the unique opportunity to work at The Daily Utah Chronicle.

The ASUU General Assembly will vote tonight on a proposed $1.4-million student government budget for the 2008-2009 school year, which includes a reinstatement of funding for the student radio station KUTE and a number of amendments made by the Senate April 17.

Writing center changes site

By By Rochelle McConkie April 22, 2008
Students receiving writing help won't have to work in the hallway anymore when the University Writing Center relocates next summer to what is now a storage room at the top of the west entrance of the Marriott Library. Senators from the Associated Students of the University of Utah voted on Thursday to give $5,000 to the $25,000 project, and administrators have agreed to pay the rest.

Jensen: More needs to be done about China

By By Matteo Jensen April 22, 2008
The Olympic torch run is supposed to be both beautiful and inspiring. This year's run, however, has been disrupted by thousands of protesters who turned out in Paris, London and New Delhi to protest the occupation of Tibet, China's shoddy human-rights record and its support for murderous regimes in Sudan and Zimbabwe.

Summer getaways: Yellowstone attracts visitors with skin-melting pool

By By Natalie Dicou April 22, 2008
Life can get pretty hectic here on campus. Why not spend your summer communing with nature? That's what Yellowstone National Park is all about. With its bizarre yet fascinating collection of geysers and hot springs, it routinely leaves park visitors thinking, "Wow, this planet really is a living organism.

Bateman: U needs texting emergency system

By By Joseph Bateman April 22, 2008
The Virginia Tech tragedy revealed a glaring public safety problem on campuses across the country. It illustrated the need for a crisis address system to notify students if a tragedy should occur on campus. In the case of Virginia Tech, the perpetrator murdered one student two hours before he returned to campus, killed 31 people and wounded 23 others.

Pizza: What’s in a name?

April 22, 2008
Everyone always asks me, "Is Tony Pizza your real name?" My response to that question varies with my mood. Typically, I just offer a courtesy laugh and a smile until someone states the inevitable, "I'll bet you got a lot of crap growing up." Again, I offer a consolatory chuckle and a nod for good measure.

Peterson: Ute on paper, dirty Cougar at heart

By By Jason Peterson April 22, 2008
Never in the history of The Daily Utah Chronicle has a die-hard BYU fan written for the sports section. I honestly don't know if that's true. I suppose it's possible a few closet Cougars masqueraded as Ute beat writers in the past, but I guarantee no one has openly admitted his or her love for good ol' Brigham Young as often as I have.
