Sewell: Don’t wait for this nation to fall apart

By By James Sewell April 22, 2008
In linguistics, there is a formal notion that applies to certain kinds of operations we use when formulating what we want to say, and we call it "procrastination." Essentially, it says we put off doing anything until the last possible moment to save computational strains on our brains.

Summer getaways: Moab offers variety of happy trails

By By Kirk Taylor April 22, 2008
Moab has got to be one of my favorite vacation destinations. This place is incredible for outdoor enthusiasts, and it's simply hard to beat. Arches National and Canyonlands National Parks are nearby for some wonderful sightseeing as well. It is arguably the top destination for mountain biking and four-wheeling in the United States, but the other recreational opportunities are nothing to sneeze at, either.

Summer getaways: Grand Canyon is unforgettable

By By Cody Brunner April 22, 2008
You probably think you know what the Grand Canyon entails -- a few rocks, a big hole, maybe a little agua depending on your vantage point. Many make the journey with their parents at a young age. Some leave the natural wonder with a sense of accomplishment, others knowing that there is a greater power out there.

Summer getaways: Bright lights of Wendover attracts the sinful

April 22, 2008
The signs say it's 100 minutes from Salt Lake City, but the armpit of Las Vegas is only as far as you want to make it. Most people choose to start their gambling before they get to Wendover, Nev., so the time it takes to traverse the 121 miles to the Tooele suburb is all up to the driver.

Pizza: What’s in a name?

April 22, 2008
Everyone always asks me, "Is Tony Pizza your real name?" My response to that question varies with my mood. Typically, I just offer a courtesy laugh and a smile until someone states the inevitable, "I'll bet you got a lot of crap growing up." Again, I offer a consolatory chuckle and a nod for good measure.

Summer getaways: Heber Valley is the bomb

By By Tim Haslam April 22, 2008
For those who want to get away from Salt Lake Valley but don't want to drive for hours and hours, Heber City, Utah, is the place for you. Located 40.2 miles southeast of the U, Heber City has a wide variety of fun things to do, all set with the majestic Wasatch Mountains as the backdrop.

Bateman: U needs texting emergency system

By By Joseph Bateman April 22, 2008
The Virginia Tech tragedy revealed a glaring public safety problem on campuses across the country. It illustrated the need for a crisis address system to notify students if a tragedy should occur on campus. In the case of Virginia Tech, the perpetrator murdered one student two hours before he returned to campus, killed 31 people and wounded 23 others.

Jensen: More needs to be done about China

By By Matteo Jensen April 22, 2008
The Olympic torch run is supposed to be both beautiful and inspiring. This year's run, however, has been disrupted by thousands of protesters who turned out in Paris, London and New Delhi to protest the occupation of Tibet, China's shoddy human-rights record and its support for murderous regimes in Sudan and Zimbabwe.

Summer getaways: Yellowstone attracts visitors with skin-melting pool

By By Natalie Dicou April 22, 2008
Life can get pretty hectic here on campus. Why not spend your summer communing with nature? That's what Yellowstone National Park is all about. With its bizarre yet fascinating collection of geysers and hot springs, it routinely leaves park visitors thinking, "Wow, this planet really is a living organism.

Protestors clash over China Olympics

April 21, 2008
While Tibetan students and members of the Salt Lake community walked through downtown Salt Lake City on Sunday to oppose China's occupation of Tibet, Chinese students and community members held a rival protest to show support for the Chinese government and the Beijing Olympics.
