Ebadi says foreign militaries cannot solve Iran’s problems

By By Edgar Zuniga Jr. April 21, 2008
Despite blasting Iran's human rights record on several accounts, Nobel Peace Prize winner Shirin Ebadi said she believes the solutions to those human rights violations will come from the Iranian people and not foreign military intervention. About 700 students, professors and community members filled the Union Ballroom Friday morning to welcome and listen to Shirin Ebadi, an Iranian crusader of women and children's rights who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2003.

Global warming hot topic at Polar Palooza

By By Melissa Oveson April 21, 2008
In 1975, George Divoky traveled to Cooper Island in the Arctic to start a study that would focus on seabirds. Thirty-three years later, Divoky said his study has turned into much more as he has watched the effects of global warming on young birds. A once growing colony of birds has already dropped in numbers as ice begins to melt and fish become scarce.

Baseball: Lobos pound Utes

By By Cody Brunner April 21, 2008
For the second consecutive weekend, the U baseball team dropped all three of its games against a conference opponent. This time around, the culprit was New Mexico, and the Lobos beat the Utes in convincing fashion in two out of the three games. The one game when the Utes did give themselves a chance was Friday's round.

By By Anastasia Niedrich April 21, 2008
As my undergraduate academic career and time at the U comes to a close May 2, I thought it appropriate to look back and recap the lessons I've learned or things I've tried to bring to the attention of readers in the columns I've written during my time with The Daily Utah Chronicle.

Letter: U used to be hot spot for big-time bands

April 21, 2008
Editor: Back in the day (2006), I was the Concerts Chair for the Presenters Office ("Concerts should feature bands students want," Chase Straight, April 18). In my year, I brought Death Cab for Cutie, Wilco, Yo La Tengo, Jurassic 5 and Violent Femmes. I fought hard for U concerts, and it makes me sad to see the quality of shows go downhill.

Letter: Don’t hate on expression through fashion

April 21, 2008
Editor: To quote Janice Kopaunik's column ("Dress for college success," April 18): "If you want to be respected, dress the part." I don't have to look at Janice to know that she is not respectable for judging her fellow students as she has, and even more so, for encouraging them to do the same.

April 21, 2008
While Tibetan students and members of the Salt Lake community walked through downtown Salt Lake City on Sunday to oppose China's occupation of Tibet, Chinese students and community members held a rival protest to show support for the Chinese government and the Beijing Olympics.

Members of the U ski team, past and present, gathered at Snowbird Ski Resort during the weekend to celebrate the group's 60th anniversary. "It's our first-ever ski team reunion in 60 years," said Barbara Yamada, who helped organize the event. In addition to a social reception and banquet, the celebration featured three events Saturday: a four-mile, uphill cross country race starting at the bottom of the mountain, a dual super slalom race and a scavenger hunt.

Mueller: The cell phone camera shot heard round the world

By By Lauren Mueller April 21, 2008
Score one more for the Utah porno police. Quick, kids, hide your National Geographics, or Davis County prosecutors could slap you with a third-degree felony charge. A 15-year-old boy has been officially charged in the nude cell phone photo swap scandal that sent half the state and the entire Utah State Legislature into a tizzy several weeks back.
