Dramatic Agenda

April 21, 2008
Scandal, politics and a sound fiscal policy? Yes, please! "Treasure," the original play by U theater faculty member Timothy Slover, opens tonight at Studio 115 of the Performing Arts Building. Based on the true story of Treasury Secretary Alexander Hamilton, Slover's play presents 18th century politics in all its adulterous and conniving glory.

Local artists shine at the stroll

By By Adam Fifield April 21, 2008
Salt Lake City's monthly gallery stroll, happening Friday from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at participating art galleries, is something that everyone should go to at least once. Like many others, you might even find the event addicting enough to attend every month. First of all, the Salt Lake Gallery Stroll is proof that Salt Lake City does, in fact, have a thriving, local art scene -- in case you thought otherwise.

The Counterfeiters’ explores layers of human nature

By By Rachel Adams April 21, 2008
The Holocaust is a popular topic for German (or in this case, Austrian) filmmakers for a variety of reasons. For one, the Amis (that's us) take a German film seriously if it's about the Holocaust (this one even garnered the Foreign Film Oscar). They're surrounded by the history of it, by a wealth of documents and landmarks.

The Inevitable Rise of Saul Williams

April 21, 2008
Saul Williams boards a busy, New Orleans elevator. "Hold on. If I lose you, I'll call right back." The signal buzzes before Williams's born-poetic voice fights back through the static, "My first love was hip-hop." Growing up in rural New York in the '80s, hip-hop became more than a soundtrack for Williams.

Niedrich: Words of wisdom

By By Anastasia Niedrich April 21, 2008
As my undergraduate academic career and time at the U comes to a close May 2, I thought it appropriate to look back and recap the lessons I've learned or things I've tried to bring to the attention of readers in the columns I've written during my time with The Daily Utah Chronicle.

Mueller: The cell phone camera shot heard round the world

By By Lauren Mueller April 21, 2008
Score one more for the Utah porno police. Quick, kids, hide your National Geographics, or Davis County prosecutors could slap you with a third-degree felony charge. A 15-year-old boy has been officially charged in the nude cell phone photo swap scandal that sent half the state and the entire Utah State Legislature into a tizzy several weeks back.

Chronicle’s view: Finally, a pledge for climate neutrality

April 21, 2008
It's about time. In June of 2007, The Chronicle published an article on a campus climate pledge that U President Michael Young had yet to sign ("U hasn't joined campus climate pledge," June 18, 2007). The pledge, which would have the U work toward climate neutrality by doing an emissions inventory and then develop a plan within two years of how it would work toward the neutrality, had been signed by every other Utah university until now.

Letter: U used to be hot spot for big-time bands

April 21, 2008
Editor: Back in the day (2006), I was the Concerts Chair for the Presenters Office ("Concerts should feature bands students want," Chase Straight, April 18). In my year, I brought Death Cab for Cutie, Wilco, Yo La Tengo, Jurassic 5 and Violent Femmes. I fought hard for U concerts, and it makes me sad to see the quality of shows go downhill.
