The silence of the fat lady

March 14, 2008
With three innings to go, it didn't look possible. But as U head coach Bill Kinneberg remarked after the game, "College baseball is funny." If that's true, then the joke was on the UNLV Rebels on Sunday afternoon, as the Utes scored 10 unanswered runs to erase a 9-0 deficit and win in dramatic fashion in the final inning to salvage the weekend set.

Horrific in its depravity! Monstrous and stupefying in its sheer lunacy! Able to devour the soul of an innocent child in a mere three hours! We're here at the aftermath of the premiere of "Grindhouse," and in the words of immortal WWF announcers of the past, I don't believe what I just saw! We have just witnessed something so outrageous, so supercharged with testosterone and, yes, even estrogen, that it might reinvigorate the face of cinema itself! We're here live, and let me tell you, people are running out of the theater screaming, so visceral was their cinematic experience! They're peeling off the strip and running each other off the road! They're attacking each other in mobs! Teenagers are losing their virginity as we speak! What do you make of all this, Aaron? Allen: Satisfied, Chris.

Bowled over

PASADENA, Calif.-The answer was a resounding no. No, the U football team has not yet overcome the road woes that defined its 2005 season. No, the Utes could not yet prove they belong with the upper tier of the vaunted Pac-10. No, the Utes did not look like a team ready to make another run at the BCS, as even the likes of ESPN.

Letdown in Laramie

They're up, they're down, they're up?and now they're down again. All season long, through all the highs and lows, the Utes kept their collective attention on winning the Mountain West Conference. That task got a little more difficult Saturday afternoon as the U football team got trounced by the Wyoming Cowboys, 31-15.

With friends like these: MySpace eats away at your soul like a cancerous boil

March 14, 2008
Mass stupidity has a new name, and it is called MySpace. Or Facebook?or any of the other mindless concoctions embraced by college-aged students yearning for meaning, acceptance and attention. Their lives, of course, are defined by such important issues as: What Disney character is your alter ego? What piercing are you? What mythological creature are you? What literary character are you? What color is your heart? No, I'm not making these up.

LAS VEGAS--After going winless throughout the MWC regular season, the Rams followed the example set forth by the Colorado State women the day before and picked up their first conference win by beating Wyoming 68-63 in the play-in game. As he has been for the majority of the season, Marcus Walker was dominant from the floor.
