Women’s Hoops: Utes put ’70s record on the line

By By Natalie Dicou February 24, 2008
The U women's basketball team has a perfect 11-0 record in MWC play, but that doesn't mean the Utes have easily breezed past everyone they've played. No. 18 Utah (22-3, 11-0) has dealt its share of blowouts this season, but New Mexico (13-11, 5-6 in MWC) gave the Utes a run for their money like no other conference team has been able to.

Men’s Hoops: Utes don’t dwell on loss, prepare to tame Lobos

February 24, 2008
No loss comes without the sting of defeat. The fact that Wednesday's loss to BYU hurt a little more than usual became clear in the locker room following the game -- and not just because it came at the hands of Utah's biggest rival. As reporters fired questions at Jim Boylen after the game, the first-year head coach could only answer with a festering stare.

Red Rocks ride vault, crowd to victory

So much for the U gymnastics team overlooking a weaker opponent Friday night at the Huntsman Center. The Red Rocks stayed focused on the competition at hand despite anticipation for their meet on Sunday against No. 9 UCLA and improve to 8-0 on the season with wins over Southern Utah and Utah State.

Big man back on campus?

Over a span of about five minutes in the second half of the Runnin' Utes recent loss to New Mexico, Ute fans got a peek at what their star center is capable of when he plays near the fullest of his ability. Nevill, who was saddled with two fouls early and forced to ride the pine for the majority of the first half, put his foot on the gas pedal midway through the latter half and dominated around the hoop.

1. BYU (21-5, 10-1) Up next: @ SDSU 2/23 With the 67-59 win over Utah on Wednesday, it is now the Cougars' title to lose. The versatility they showed in beating the Utes cannot be matched in the MWC. Still, BYU showed that its Teflon coat isn't without holes.

Not so happily ever after

February 22, 2008
"This is an opportunity to see a love story from an unusual perspective," said cast member Kory Kyker, a freshman in the Actor Training Program, about Emma Rice's adaptation of "Tristan and Yseult," which the U theater department opened Wednesday. Rice, whose adaptation of the classic play was originally penned for England's Kneehigh Theatre Company, said the play is "for those of us who know that love is a trap as well as a liberator, that the pain of choosing one person over another tears the soul and never quite heals.

Charlie Bartlett’ makes for incoherent disappointment

By By Rachel Adams February 22, 2008
I did some research on Sidney Kimmel Entertainment, the production company behind the film "Charlie Bartlett. I couldn't help feeling that "Charlie Bartlett" seemed fake -- an attempt by someone who knows nothing about indie films to produce an impostor indie. Call me paranoid, but during "Bartlett," I kept picturing a spy taking notes on all of the independent films he's ever seen and reporting to some fat cat in a big studio. "Nudity," he would note hoarsely after watching "American Beauty" (which only barely counts, but of course he wouldn't know that).
