The Drop (2/21): Chronicle’s guide for the music store

February 22, 2008
Crowbar and Hatebreed are icons of modern heavy music. It's near impossible to find a new heavy, hardcore act that doesn't swipe a sludgy progression from the former or dun-dun-dun-dun-dun-dun-dun-dun-dun riff from the latter.

Enormous Rooms showcases U’s creative force

By By Adam Fifield February 22, 2008
The editors of the literary journal Enormous Rooms have been giving U undergraduates an exclusive sounding board during the past four years. In the very first issue of Enormous Rooms, then editors Tyrel Campbell and Bryan Wallis wrote, "Although undergraduates may often be relegated to a second tier, with sweeping depth and scope, the artists represented in this collection speak for themselves as to value and relevance.

Not so happily ever after

"This is an opportunity to see a love story from an unusual perspective," said cast member Kory Kyker, a freshman in the Actor Training Program, about Emma Rice's adaptation of "Tristan and Yseult," which the U theater department opened Wednesday. Rice, whose adaptation of the classic play was originally penned for England's Kneehigh Theatre Company, said the play is "for those of us who know that love is a trap as well as a liberator, that the pain of choosing one person over another tears the soul and never quite heals.

Students and U staff blast Buttars

By By Rochelle McConkie February 22, 2008
Shae Sveniker stood on the steps outside the House of Representatives Chamber, his voice resounding throughout the Capitol rotunda, echoing from the dome walls. He clenched his fist as he called the senator by name, speaking of slavery and oppression and directing his words "to you, Chris. Sveniker, a Salt Lake Community College student, read his original poem, "Letter from Saint Martin de Porres to Sen. Chris Buttars," on Friday afternoon as part of a demonstration organized by U professors protesting Sen. Chris Buttars, R-West Jordan.

Charlie Bartlett’ makes for incoherent disappointment

By By Rachel Adams February 22, 2008
I did some research on Sidney Kimmel Entertainment, the production company behind the film "Charlie Bartlett. I couldn't help feeling that "Charlie Bartlett" seemed fake -- an attempt by someone who knows nothing about indie films to produce an impostor indie. Call me paranoid, but during "Bartlett," I kept picturing a spy taking notes on all of the independent films he's ever seen and reporting to some fat cat in a big studio. "Nudity," he would note hoarsely after watching "American Beauty" (which only barely counts, but of course he wouldn't know that).

Rail Jam strikes chord with crowd

By By Kirk Taylor February 22, 2008
By all measures the Cricket Campus Railjam was a success. The 20 foot-high scaffolding was striking to say the least and the music could be heard all across campus. DJ Gristified kept solid tunes spinning throughout the competition while the participants and crowd vibed on.

Men’s Hoops: MWC Power Rankings

By By Cody Brunner February 22, 2008
1. BYU (21-5, 10-1) Up next: @ SDSU 2/23 With the 67-59 win over Utah on Wednesday, it is now the Cougars' title to lose. The versatility they showed in beating the Utes cannot be matched in the MWC. Still, BYU showed that its Teflon coat isn't without holes.
