The Death of the Art House

By By Rachel Adams February 17, 2008
During the final weeks of January, in the shadow of Sundance with all its hype and glory, Trolley Square Cinemas crept quietly into a corner and died. Yes, I'm going to be melodramatic about it. Let us don our clothes of mourning. Trolley Square, a chic and trendy tourist destination frequented for the most part by out-of-staters, has no more use for a theater and has closed Regency Theatres in the first step of renovating it out of existence.

Technology killed the mix tape star

By By Trevor Hale February 17, 2008
I've said it before and I'll say it again -- computers killed the mix tape. It's true, and it's a shame. I remember those nights sitting at home, timing the cassette player just right so that I could fit more songs on a tape. I spent hours searching through my CD collection, wondering if the object of my desire was going to read too much -- or almost worse, not enough -- into what the songs were about.

A Bluesy Valentine’s

By By Adam Fifield February 17, 2008
Valentine's Day barely registers in a dark and smoky blues club -- the musicians themselves will tell you that holidays come and go, but for them "the blues" is a continuous state of mind. The blues doesn't have to be sad, either, said BB Melanson, who plays drums and sings for The Blue Devils Blues Revue every Monday night at club Zanzibar.

Advice: Get her a Zac Efron butt plug for the Big V-Day

By By Clayton Norlen and Alexandra Gregory February 17, 2008
Dear He Says, She Says, I've been dating this guy for a while now, but we don't really connect on an intellectual level. Every time I try to talk to him about our relationship or issues I'm having with friends and family, he goes back to his sports game! I tried making him jealous with a shrine to Zac Efron and hid it in my lingerie drawer (unfortunately, my boyfriend never goes in there anyway).

The Drop (2/14): Chronicle’s guide for the music store

February 17, 2008
British Sea Power Do You Like Rock Music? Rough Trade Three out of five stars By the homogenizing graces of pop radio, British Sea Power's third full-length, Do You Like Rock Music?, will first strike its listeners as an across-the-pond combination of recent indie-darlings Modest Mouse and Arcade Fire.

Five events better than prime time (2/14)

February 17, 2008
Now entering his mid-80s, Gaylen Hansen is a true testament to the power of paint. From humble roots on a Utah farm through the UCLA art program and 25 years of professorship at Washington State University, Hansen has developed a style that is as much farmland humility as high-art experimentation.

Movies: ‘In Bruges’ goes mainstream in America

By By Sam Potter February 17, 2008
Who can forget family vacations? Those great, epic events when emotions run high and attempts to find a place that everyone can enjoy seem more difficult than rocket science. Some just want to find a place to unwind, free from the pressures of school and work. Others want to see new things, explore historical sites and fill their days with a rigorous itinerary. Others simply want to have some fun and get some restlessness out of their systems.

Movies: A Flesh-and-Blood Romance

By By Rachel Adams February 17, 2008
The chick-flick is a tired genre. It has a much narrower scope than action, comedy or drama. You lean too far to one side, and you're not a romantic comedy -- you're a comedy. You lean too far to the other side, and you're a drama. In fact, it's a wonder that people still attempt to make good romantic comedies and it's not surprising they don't often succeed.

Floor routines power Red Rocks past Washington

By By Jon Gilbert February 17, 2008
The U gymnastics team used its floor routines to defeat the Washington Huskies 197.100-194.675 in Seattle Saturday. The Red Rocks (6-0) scored their second highest all-around score of the season all while implementing upgrades into their routines in the process.
