Rugby: Scrummin’ Utes get unexpected boost

By By Jason Peterson February 15, 2008
Rugby is not a sport for the faint of heart or any other part of the body. The U rugby club learned that lesson the hard way last weekend in San Diego. The No. 3-ranked Scrummin' Utes took on a pair of top-ranked teams in Nebraska (No. 11) and Navy (No. 13) on Friday and Saturday.

Women’s Hoops: Whip it good

By By Natalie Dicou February 15, 2008
Kalee Whipple, the U women's basketball team's starting small forward, won't be offended if you tell her you've never heard of her hometown of Hiko, Nev. No one's heard of it. In fact, it's described as a "semi-ghost town" on Wikipedia.com. "If you go north of Vegas for a hundred miles, you'll just randomly run into (it)," said the sophomore.

Peterson: All-Star game ain’t what it used to be

By By Jason Peterson February 15, 2008
For those of you still paying attention, the NBA All-Star Weekend is set for its 57th go-around beginning this afternoon with the NBA All-Star Jam Session. I ask if you're still aware because, lately, the annual gathering of NBA All-Stars has given us little to fuss about.

Darwin back on campus

By By Melissa Oveson February 15, 2008
Even though the word "Darwinism" can strike up much debate, the concept was celebrated at the U as part of the 199th Darwin Day on Feb. 12. The event was the first time Darwin Day has been celebrated in Utah. "All the way from geology to anthropology and back up again, Darwin is all over this campus," said Kristen Hawkes, a professor in anthropology, who spoke of her own work in the fields of evolution and biological anthropology.

Kopaunik: We need immigrants

By By Janice Kopaunik February 15, 2008
American pride lies in our tradition of being a great land of opportunity. We are a nation founded by immigrants who were escaping hardship. Some flag-wavers seem to forget this fact, as well as the benefits of immigration, while they are building walls -- physical and literal -- between the States and Mexico.

Shattuck: Lies can help find truth

By By Ryan Shattuck February 15, 2008
It's all right. I can handle the truth. I wouldn't ask for an opinion if I knew I couldn't take it. Don't worry about me. I have a thick skin. I simply want to know: Do these pants make me look fat? If the answer is "yes," I don't want to hear it. Dishonesty is a sticky substance.

Kamrani: Go indie or go home

By By Chris Kamrani February 15, 2008
Conformity. A term hazily thrown around when it comes to the modernization of certain cultures. We have all been graced with certain pop-culture fads throughout the decades, but one that is proving to be the frontrunner for our generation is of remarkable adherence, not to mention affluent hypocrisy.

Baseball Preview

By By Cody Brunner February 15, 2008
Cautiously optimistic. That's the only way to describe the U baseball team heading into the 2008 season. It returns plenty of talent from a year ago, but must also deal with the loss of arguably its best player, Jay Brossman. The Utes have plenty of gifted new recruits, but may have to rely on them before they are ready.
