Celtics hand Jazz just third home loss

By By Jason Peterson December 31, 2007
As the old saying goes, "Three heads are better than two." The dynamic duo of Deron Williams and Carlos Boozer, along with the rest of the short-handed Utah Jazz, gave the Boston Celtics all they could handle. In the end Boston's "Big Three" proved too much to handle in a thrilling 104-98 victory for the Celtics.

First-year head coach Jim Boylen said he wanted to bring winning back to the Runnin' Utes' program. He never said it would always be pretty. Johnnie Bryant scored 17 points and Utah (8-3) overcame one of its poorest shooting percentages of the season to beat Idaho State (2-9) by a final score of 68-51 at the Huntsman Center on Thursday night.

Poinsettia Bowl: Seven’s heaven (12/19)

December 29, 2007
SAN DIEGO -- Eric Weddle has been spending so much time with the Utah football team this week, Kyle Whittingham might have forgotten that he doesn't have the former MWC Defensive Player of the Year at his disposal anymore. Or, maybe, Whittingham just hopes newly appointed Navy head coach Ken Niumatalolo is too busy adjusting to his two-week old job to notice. Either way, if R.J. Rice isn't the No. 7 that takes the field for the third annual Poinsettia Bowl, nobody can say Whittingham didn't offer fair warning.

By By Chris Kamrani December 29, 2007
Most U students know Robert Johnson as the free safety from south-central Los Angeles that almost single-handedly sent the then-mighty UCLA Bruins home with a loss. But now the sophomore is someone else-just a happy-go-lucky student athlete. Johnson grew up in Watts, Calif.

Will the Utes be able to shake off the cobwebs and stop Navy's high-powered option attack? Led by quarterback Kaipo-Noa Kaheaku-Enhada, the Midshipmen's offense ranks first in the nation in rushing yards per game (351.5) and averages close to 40 points every game.

By By Cody Brunner December 29, 2007
With the Utah football team heading to San Diego to take on Navy on Dec. 20, The Daily Utah Chronicle caught up with Ute quarterback Brian Johnson to talk about the perks of Bowl games, the Bowl Championship Series and what the Utes have to do to end the season on a positive note.

Rivalry week is just getting started for the U's hockey club. Starting tonight, the Skatin' Utes will take to the ice in Provo against BYU at 9 p.m. The two will conclude a back-to-back set Saturday night at the U's Steiner Ice Arena at 7:30 p.m. "They're our biggest rivals, and obviously, we wanna beat them," said U goalie Jason Petho, who had no trouble hiding his feelings about the Cougars.

Poinsettia Bowl: Utes hold high regard for Middies (12/21)

By By Cody Brunner December 29, 2007
SAN DIEGO -- Utah came out the victor in the Poinsettia Bowl and hoisted a sizeable trophy, but the Navy Midshipmen left with something, too -- the genuine respect of their opponent. To show their appreciation for the Navy players and their sacrifices for the nation's military, the Utes lined up behind the Midshipmen after the game to listen to their school song.

Poinsettia Bowl: Weddle gave Johnson pivotal advice (12/20)

December 29, 2007
SAN DIEGO -- The day before Thursday's Poinsettia Bowl, Kyle Whittingham joked about sneaking former Ute and current San Diego Charger defensive back Eric Weddle onto the field. It appears that having Weddle on the sidelines was enough. Utah quarterback Brian Johnson credits his former teammate and good friend for getting him in the right mindset for the second half of Utah's 35-32 come-from-behind victory over the Navy Midshipmen.
