Free throws got the their name because they are shots that are free of defenders. In Utah point guard Tyler Kepkay's case, they might as well be free points. Kepkay went a perfect 8-for-8 down the stretch to stop a resilient Missouri State team from making a late comeback. Luke Nevill led Utah with 18 points, six rebounds and three assists as the Utes beat the Bears 66-54 on Saturday afternoon at the Huntsman Center.

U joins effort to fix Afghan legal system

Faculty from the U's College of Law will help try to fix Afghanistan's tarnished legal system. As part of a new program, faculty members from the U will train Afghan prosecutors. The effort aims at creating a "fair, equitable and effective" legal system in Afghanistan, according to a press release.

Capecchi receives Nobel Prize

U professor Mario Capecchi was awarded the Nobel Prize for medicine in Sweden on Monday. Capecchi and his co-recipients, Oliver Smithies and Martin Evans, received the prestigious award for their work in gene targeting. Capecchi's development of knock-out mice technology -- or the ability to alter specific genes in mice with embryonic stem cells -- has allowed researchers to model hundreds of diseases, like cancer.

Vagina Monologues’ tryouts held on Monday

After a one-year absence, "The Vagina Monologues," a production raising awareness for women's issues, will return to the U. The student government Presenter's Office will host the production in late January. The ASUU Presenter's Office is seeking students to participate in the performance and will host tryouts on Monday.

Romney addresses faith

Students who watched Mitt Romney's Thursday address on religion were both impressed by his statements that church leaders wouldn't influence his decisions as president and disappointed that he didn't give more details about his faith. Students, professors and reporters gathered in the Hinckley Institute of Politics early Thursday morning to watch Romney's "Faith in America" address expecting a disclosure of his specific spiritual beliefs and how they relate to his politics.

Celebrating Hanukkah

A group of students and community members recited prayers and songs in English and Hebrew to celebrate Hanukkah, the Jewish Festival of Lights, at the Governor's Mansion on Tuesday night. The event was the first time Hanukkah has been celebrated at the Governor's Mansion.

Physicians earn credit through literary discussion group

Practicing physicians must maintain a certain amount of continuing medical education credit, and many attend joint discussions with the Physician Literature and Medicine Discussion Groups to fulfill that requirement. Once a month, the groups meet to discuss a work of literature and how it relates to the world of medicine.
