Gun advocates seek open-carry policy

December 6, 2007
The U and gun rights activists appear to be headed for another legal clash. The debate: whether or not concealed weapons permit holders can openly display their firearms on campus. Students and staff with permits have been allowed to carry guns on campus since last fall when the Utah State Supreme Court struck down the U's gun ban.

By By Joseph Bateman December 6, 2007
Recently, Utah senator-for-life Orrin Hatch told an audience at Utah Valley State College that if environmentalists "had any brains," then they would support nuclear energy as a solution to global warming. As the fallacy of this argument has already been exposed ("Nuclear power isn't the answer to our crisis," Nov.

Letter: Big pharma isn’t the only industry against marijuania

December 6, 2007
Editor: Regarding David Servatius' thoughtful column, "Big pharma doesn't want to legalize" (Dec. 5): It's not just the pharmaceutical industry that has a vested interest in making sure marijuana is not legalized. Marijuana consumers consume substantially less alcohol than non-marijuana users.

Letter: “You don’t feel safe, yet you don’t feel as if you’re in danger.”

December 6, 2007
Editor: After reading Ana Breton's article about the threats within the College of Architecture ("Threat averted," Dec. 3), I was extremely upset. The quotes submitted under my name were in no way what I said at any point in the discussion. Her comment which states, "We're feeling like we're not safe but not in danger" doesn't even make sense to me, and I allegedly said it.

This Kruger is scary on the field

By By Cody Brunner December 6, 2007
There might have been a time when Utah defensive end Paul Kruger felt bad for an opposing quarterback after delivering a bone-jarring hit. There might have been a time when he thought twice about digging his helmet into a helpless pass-thrower's back. The time for sorrow has long since passed.

Boylen hot? Or just Luke-warm?

By By Chris Kamrani December 6, 2007
Jim Boylen and his Runnin' Utes got their second taste of an in-state rivalry game, but unlike their previous win over Weber State, they made sure they wouldn't have to claw from behind in this one. The Utes started the game on an 11-0 run thanks to sharp shooting from guard Tyler Kepkay and forward Shaun Green and never looked back, defeating the Utah State Aggies, 72-48.

Letter: You on snow watch? Check out this link

December 6, 2007
I just read Jessica Dunn's article, , and I was surprised that she didn't mention one of the best avenues for getting weather forecasts for Utah ski resorts. I can only assume this is because she hasn't heard of it. I am a graduate student in mountain meteorology here at the U, and I help run a non-profit, student-run, high quality website called "Utah Ski Weather.

The U's Academic Senate approved a resolution Wednesday, officially endorsing involvement with Focus the Nation, a national event promoting teach-ins and discussion on issues surrounding global warming. The resolution was sponsored by the U's Office of Sustainability and the SEED student group.

Runnin’ Utes face Utah State tonight

December 5, 2007
This season, the Runnin' Utes will keep an "Under Construction" sign up as head coach Jim Boylen tries to remodel Utah into a championship team once again. Defensive improvement has been the bricks. Sweat has been the mortar. Slowly but surely, the U men's basketball team has built a foundation.

Year in review: RSL fans ejected for holding Tibetan flag

December 5, 2007
June 8 Two Real Salt Lake supporters were kicked out of Rice-Eccles Stadium for protesting an exhibition match against the Chinese national team. Waving a Tibetan flag and a sign featuring the date "6-4" written in Chinese, representing the government's shooting of Tiananmen Square protestors which occurred on June 4, 1989, the fans were forced to leave with 20 minutes left to play after a number of Chinese players left the field in disgust.
