Year in review: Campus security task force named

June 5 U President Michael Young organized a campus security task force in response to April's shootings at Virginia Tech University and the Utah Supreme Court's decision to overturn the university's previous no-gun policy. The task force is still looking into three core aspects of emergency response: how to deal with troubling behavioral issues in students and faculty, what to do in the presence of weapons and feasible ways to notify the entire campus of a crisis.

Year in review: Animal rights group denied U records

July 2 Student animal-rights group Utah Primate Freedom was denied access to records when it asked the U for names and salaries of all faculty involved in animal testing. The group decided to advocate their cause by staging protests in front of the homes of U researchers who participate in animal testing in late 2006 and early 2007.

Year in review: Office of Sustainability opens

October 4 As part of the U's efforts to become more environmentally conscious, U President Michael Young announced the new Office of Sustainability, an administrative branch created to coordinate environmental efforts on campus. Earlier in the year, U administration, facilities and the Associated Students of the University of Utah joined together to initiate a campus-wide recycling program that was launched this summer.

Year in review: FUSE triumphs in ASUU elections

March 15 The FUSE Party dominated the Associated Students of the University of Utah elections, sweeping all executive and most legislative positions. FUSE presidential candidate Spencer Pearson and vice presidential candidate Basim Motiwala beat Forward Party candidates Rick Pehrson and Clayton McDonald by 526 votes, receiving 54 percent of the vote.

Year in review: Capecchi wins Nobel Prize

October 1 Mario Capecchi astounded the U by winning the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his development of the "knock-out" mice technology in genetically-altered animal models. Capecchi's work, which involved more than 20 years of probing, allows researchers to study complex diseases from the beginning of their development.

Wife arrested for slapping husband

A U student was arrested and booked in jail after her husband told police that she had slapped him during an argument. Jennifer Bassett, an exercise and sport science major at the U, was booked into the Salt Lake County Metro Jail on Sunday for assaulting her husband, whose name was not released.

U to join global warming education event

The U's Academic Senate approved a resolution Wednesday, officially endorsing involvement with Focus the Nation, a national event promoting teach-ins and discussion on issues surrounding global warming. The resolution was sponsored by the U's Office of Sustainability and the SEED student group.

New robot retrieves library books

Next time you visit the U's Marriott Library, a new four-story robot might be able to help you find books. The robot is one of three new systems the library has installed to make it quicker and easier for patrons to obtain information. "We wanted to do everything we could to make the library experience best for users," said Ian Godfrey, the library's facilities and access services manager.

Arrested student no longer ‘a threat’

U officials are providing few details regarding the student who was arrested after damaging a peer's property and exhibiting behavior that some students said was threatening last week. Lawrence Wright, a second-year architecture student, was taken into custody and questioned by police after showing dangerous behavior and spraypainting a student's desk on Friday.

Runnin’ Utes face Utah State tonight

This season, the Runnin' Utes will keep an "Under Construction" sign up as head coach Jim Boylen tries to remodel Utah into a championship team once again. Defensive improvement has been the bricks. Sweat has been the mortar. Slowly but surely, the U men's basketball team has built a foundation.
