By By Jon Gilbert December 3, 2007
The Navy Midshipmen enter the San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl on the heels of a historic season. Head coach Paul Johnson led his football team to its first victory over Notre Dame in 44 tries and to its record sixth consecutive triumph over archrival Army.

Turning heat waste into electricity

By By Jonathan Ng December 3, 2007
A U professor has developed a new acoustic heat engine he says may be able to harness waste heat from power plants to generate massive amounts of electricity. Orest Symko, a professor in the physics department, demonstrated how the device works and talked about the need for this technology as part of the Frontiers of Science lecture series.

Professors should learn how to teach

By By Adam Kirk December 3, 2007
College is expensive, which is why I was confused to find the quality of teaching less, in many regards, than that which I experienced in high school. With little supervision and teaching assistant students who do all of their grading, many so-called "professors" apply a fraction of the effort their students do to get through the semester.

Cabs should drive drunks home for free

By By Janice Kopaunik December 3, 2007
How do you spot a drunken driver? Look for someone on the road who is staring straight ahead, weaving between the lines and is possibly of college-student age. The number of drunken drivers between the ages of 18 and 24 is on the rise -- 2.1 million admit to driving under the influence.

Student arrested in SBHS after chase

By By Ana Breton December 3, 2007
A brother and sister's quick thinking Friday morning led to the arrest of a student who fled from police and later said he had purchased firearms last week. Marielle Costanza, a senior in Middle East studies, was sitting in class in the Social and Behavioral Science building when she made the connection that the student acting strangely in her class matched the description of a student police had been searching for that morning.

Romney adds religion box to House application

By By Lauren Mueller December 3, 2007
There will be no Muslims in Mitt Romney's cabinet. At least, that's the word on the street, the blogosphere, the 24-hour news channels and last week's Republican debate. This Ken Doll candidate has apparently been stripped of his original packaging by way of seemingly anti-Islamic comments made to various open ears over the course of several months.

Battle in the blizzard

December 3, 2007
Spectators who braved the weather outside the Huntsman Center to watch the Runnin' Utes in action Saturday afternoon witnessed a storm on the court as well. In the end, neither the snow nor the visiting team's 3-point blizzard prevented Utah fans from seeing what they wanted.

Jazz stomp Lakers

By By Jason Peterson December 3, 2007
At the height of the Persian empire, its army overwhelmed opponents by sheer numbers. The elite Persian soldiers were known as Immortals because when one fell, another simply took his place. On Friday night, the Utah Jazz (12-5) took a page from the history books and overwhelmed the Los Angeles Lakers, 120-96, before a sellout crowd of 19,911.

Shimmying bricks will end social injustice

By By Clayton Norlen December 3, 2007
Students and experts who attended a U symposium about social justice over the weekend had different ideas about what defines social justice and what must be done to move toward it. "It's our specialization and different interpretations of social justice that make it great," said Kristi Ryujin, the director for diversity initiatives at the University of Missouri-Kansas.

Mitchell breaks assist record

By By Natalie Dicou December 3, 2007
Some days, everything just seems to click. The U women's basketball team and point guard Leilani Mitchell enjoyed one of those days Saturday when Mitchell shattered the single-game assists record in a win over Fresno State. Monica Starrett set the Utah single-game assist record during the 1981-1982 season when she handed out 15 assists.
