My last column, ever

November 26, 2007
I knew I'd hate this job. I'm not from Utah, don't like politics and I'm generally unqualified to speak proficiently about anything except Martin Scorsese movies and the Chicago Cubs. I started out at The Chronicle as a sports writer and never intended to leave the easy comforts of free pizza and cushy press seats.

Changing the way we listen

By By Paige Fieldsted November 26, 2007
A group of electrical engineering students at the U were recently chosen as finalists in the Smart Radio Challenge, an international competition in which teams of students develop and test high-tech radios. The teams began working on their Smart Radio designs in January.

Voices: Service is a cornerstone of greek life

By By Timmy Cannon November 26, 2007
It has been a good semester for just about everyone on Greek Row. In the last couple of weeks, some houses have had successful philanthropy weeks, and some of the pledges have finished their quest to become active members of their respective fraternities or sororities.

Fire marshal keeps campus safe for 20 years

By By Jennifer Winters November 26, 2007
Michael Halligan begins every morning the same way: pushing the snooze button at 5:15 a.m., drinking a cup of coffee and getting his two children ready for elementary school during what he calls "daddy time." Halligan then heads to his other home -- the U where he has worked as fire marshal for 20 years.

BYU’s prayers answered

By By Cody Brunner November 25, 2007
PROVO-The annual rivalry game between Utah and BYU has gone to the wire the last three years, so it wasn't a big surprise for this year's edition hinged on the last two minutes. In the end, BYU's Harvey Unga ran the ball 11 yards for a touchdown with 38 seconds left and the Cougars held on for a 17-10 win at Lavell Edwards Stadium on Saturday.

Defense makes, then breaks Utes in loss

November 25, 2007
PROVO--For three years, offense has taken center stage at the annual matchup between BYU and Utah. This year it was defense that ruled the state's biggest rivalry game. Not that this was any surprise. Going into the game, BYU ranked No. 14 in the country total defense.

Utah needs the team down south

November 21, 2007
Face it, Utah fans: This week wouldn't be nearly as fun if BYU fans weren't the way they are. Think back to your childhood. How fun would it have been to pick on your brother or sister if he or she would have just sat there like a BYU freshman at his or her first school dance? It definitely would have been better when little Johnny or little Suzy fought back.

MWC volleyball tournament starts tonight

November 21, 2007
Nearly every year, the Mountain West Conference holds the women's volleyball tournament over Thanksgiving weekend. Just as frequently, Colorado State finds itself in the championship game. Although nobody can help the fact that the tournament will once again span Turkey Day weekend, the other eight teams in the MWC will do their best to stop the Rams from becoming tournament champs for the fourth time in five years.

Cross-country team finishes strong at regionals

By By Jon Gilbert November 21, 2007
The U cross country team wrapped up its 2007 season on Nov. 10 with an 11th place at the 2007 NCAA Mountain Region Championships in Ogden. Utah entered the championships, held at Weber State University, slotted 13th in the region. The women worked their way up two spots before the day's end and earned their second consecutive 11th place finish.

Sleeping with the enemy

November 21, 2007
Once upon a time, I thought the U was a safe place to reduce the amplification on my BYU radar. This past summer, it took just one zoobie on a secret mission to change that. This summer, I thought I had hired some solid sports writers for this fine news-writing establishment known as The Daily Utah Chronicle.
