Notes on the enemy: BYU depends on youthful front line

By By Jason Peterson November 21, 2007
Some things never change. Since the inception of LaVell Edwards' 28-year reign and his high-powered, aerial offense in 1972, BYU has evolved into one of the most prolific quarterback factories, yielding such college legends as Gifford Nielsen, Steve Young, Robbie Bosco, Jim McMahon and Ty Detmer.

Sleeping with the enemy

November 21, 2007
Once upon a time, I thought the U was a safe place to reduce the amplification on my BYU radar. This past summer, it took just one zoobie on a secret mission to change that. This summer, I thought I had hired some solid sports writers for this fine news-writing establishment known as The Daily Utah Chronicle.

U, BYU well matched for rivalry week

By By Cody Brunner November 21, 2007
It's here. Fans on both sides of the fence wait year-round for the annual "Holy War," and this year's version provides something no other season has been able to give -- two teams that are peaking at the right time. Going into Rivalry Week, both teams have ironed out their respective problems now and are enjoying seven-game winning streaks.

Utah has its running backs, BYU has its gun-slinger

By By Jon Gilbert November 21, 2007
Utah and BYU like to live differently. BYU loyalists keep their faces clean-shaven and their shirts white. Utah fans elect democratic mayors. Enough said. So it shouldn't be a surprise that Utah and BYU have adopted different styles of football over the years.

The women worked their way up two spots before the day's end and earned their second consecutive 11th place finish.

Utah vs. BYU: The Edge

By By Cody Brunner November 21, 2007
Quarterback Although shaky and error-prone at times, BYU quarterback Max Hall has done an admirable job in his sophomore year. His channeling of former Cougar greats has led the team to seven consecutive wins and has put him at the top of the Mountain West Conference in passing yards per game (312.

Bonds needs to take one for team

By By Chris Kamrani November 21, 2007
When describing Barry Bonds, clichés such as "painted into a corner" or "this magician's all out of tricks" could be used, but now, baseball's No. 1 with a bullet is staring down the end of the barrel. With last week's indictment, Bonds has found himself aghast, but the question is: Did anyone really expect this to happen? I, for one, did not.

MWC volleyball tournament starts tonight

November 21, 2007
Nearly every year, the Mountain West Conference holds the women's volleyball tournament over Thanksgiving weekend. Just as frequently, Colorado State finds itself in the championship game. Although nobody can help the fact that the tournament will once again span Turkey Day weekend, the other eight teams in the MWC will do their best to stop the Rams from becoming tournament champs for the fourth time in five years.

Jokester Sylvester all business on gameday

By By Jon Gilbert November 21, 2007
Every time Stevenson Sylvester flashes his pearly whites, he feels he can change someone's day. Sylvester, a sophomore linebacker for the U, learned how to change lives plenty of times from his mother while growing up in Las Vegas. Angela Levi adopted Sylvester's six cousins when they were released from their mother's custody.

Defensive backfield ready for Hall and air attack

By By Chris Kamrani November 21, 2007
The Ute secondary's biggest adversary is waiting with arms wide open. After defeating high-caliber quarterbacks such as Brian Brohm and Ben Olson, BYU super-sophomore Max Hall is now a-knockin'. Renowned for developing quarterbacks, BYU seems to have found yet another heir to its quarterback throne.
