Give us anything but nuclear

The facts are in -- global warming is real. We can now move the debate to focusing on finding the solutions. If you read a paper or turn on the television, nuclear power is being presented as the savior to our climate crisis. This myth originates at the mouths of lobbyists and companies such as General Electric (which owns NBC) within the nuclear industry.

Bush-Pakistan relationship is ironic

For how central the ideology of spreading democracy across the globe has become to President Bush's foreign policy, it seems that the recent chaos in Pakistan is nothing short of a thorn in his side. Even with the recent assault on democracy, neither the Bush administration nor Congress has made any move to halt aid to Pakistan or change our policies regarding the country.

American West Center host film Series

Illusionist to enchant Abravanel Hall

Fans of the movies "The Illusionist" and "The Prestige" take note: a magician is coming to Salt Lake City. Lyn Dillies, a professional illusionist, is performing with the Utah Symphony on Nov. 16 and Nov. 17 at Abravanel Hall. Dillies has been performing magic since childhood, when she watched magicians such as Bill Bixby on television and played with tricks bought from stores to wow friends and family.

New medical IT administrator named

Joyce Mitchell was appointed to the position of associate vice president for health sciences information technology last month. Mitchell will direct and coordinate clinical and information technology services for the U's health sciences. Mitchell came to the U two years ago as a professor of bioinformatics and became chair of the medical school's department of biomedical informatics.

Preventing crime before it happens

In response to recent break-ins and complaints about a suspicious man in the Residence Halls, campus police are educating students about the importance of knowing the definitions and limits of the law. U students should know how to protect themselves from crime, as well as how to properly identify it, said Sgt.

Dixie must drop name to join U

Dixie State College in Southern Utah might become the University of Utah, St. George, but some local residents and trustees are unhappy about losing the "Dixie" name and turning over the school's autonomy to the U. Dixie State trustees asked the U to join the schools in early September.

Classes help students overcome test anxiety

If Scantron sheets prompt your palms to sweat and number two pencils provoke panic attacks, help is on its way through Student Survival Workshops. The Learning Enhancement Program at the U will host a workshop about test anxiety Friday from 10 a.m. to noon in OSH room 105.

New IT certificate classes created

Starting next spring, the Technology Education Program at the U will begin offering Information Technology certificate classes. The new non-credit classes can be used toward degrees in computer science, engineering, communications or other technical fields.
