Jazz split back-to-back set

By By Jason Peterson November 5, 2007
This past weekend for the Utah Jazz was like eating a piece of dark chocolate -- it was sweet going down, but they were left with a bitter aftertaste. Four games into the season, the Jazz are 2-2 with both victories coming at the expense of Golden State, including Saturday night's 133-110 coup.

Sloan underappreciated

By By Chris Kamrani November 5, 2007
A 65-year-old grandfather with ancient knees, a hoarse voice and a knack for getting underneath the skin of so many. Sound like anyone you know? No, it's not your grandpappy. It's Jazz head coach Jerry Sloan. Many call Sloan's tactics "old school," and I do not doubt them for a second.

Letter: Hiding in glass closets

November 5, 2007
Editor: Another Republican moron has come out of his glass closet after a career in politics spent talking about family values and voting against bills that granted civil rights protection to gay couples. Way to go, Rep. Curtis! Denial is not a river in Africa, you hypocrite! No wonder the Northwest is a bastion of liberalism -- Republicans can only get elected in the most dismal, desperate and desolate parts of the country.

We do like you, Dave, but…

November 5, 2007
Politics are a mess -- especially when you get to know the politicians. They're nice. Somewhat intelligent. Good people. Never have I had so much difficulty pulling the trigger in a column. But, like waterboarding, it's business, not the Geneva Code. So, Buhler, thank you so much for participating in the 2007 election and congratulations on reaching the final election.

Actors poke fun at racial slurs

By By Carlos Mayorga November 5, 2007
After months of controversy, more than 1,400 people showed up to see "N*gger, Wetb*ck, Ch*nk: The Race Show," last Friday and Saturday nights at Kingsbury Hall. Although student ticket sales were up just days prior to the show, attendance was about 700 each night, short of the 800 tickets Kingsbury Hall was hoping to sell, said Sheri Jardine, a spokeswoman for Kingsbury Hall.

District 4 candidates debate

By By Clayton Norlen November 5, 2007
District 4 city council candidates Luke Garrott and Nancy Saxton debated possible plans for making downtown more vibrant and how best to support and encourage local business in Salt Lake City. Saxton said that the city never extends grants to small businesses -- only big businesses, which typically receive lower interest rates.

U should be proud of Army ROTC

By By Jeffrey Charles Knight November 5, 2007
A common issue debated in the media today is whether or not the recruitment of young men and women into the Army appears harder to come by in this day and age because of world events. The same issue could also apply to Army ROTC enrollment at the U, and other like institutions throughout the United States.

Soccer must settle for No. 5 seed

By By Natalie Dicou November 5, 2007
Prior to Saturday's match at Wyoming, U soccer coach Rich Manning had only seen one of his players red-carded in six years. That number shot up to three following a crazy game that saw two players ejected and one suffer a knee injury. After all was said and done, the Cowgirls sent the Utes home with a 4-1 defeat.

Waiting for the ‘Clinton magic’

By By Ana Breton November 5, 2007
All Ginger Thompson and Kyler Williams wanted to see was a little bit of that "Clinton magic." Thompson and Williams, both students at Weber State University, drove from Ogden to watch former President Bill Clinton on Sunday. The two friends were the first to wait in "will call" outside the building in a line that stretched all the way to the parking lot adjacent to the Alumni House.
