Around 1,700 buildings and homes have been destroyed by 18 separate fires that erupted across California a little more than a week ago. The fires forced an estimated 500,000 people to flee their homes and burned at least 426,000 acres of land, stretching from Malibu to Mexico.

After getting the oil changed Nov. 3 in the first phase of preseason tune-up, it's time for the Utah women's basketball team to rotate the tires against Fort Lewis tonight. The engine is running and Utah has already put the pedal to the metal. After an impressive rout of Montana-Western in which five Utes scored in the double digits, the Utes will get the chance to work out a few more kinks in an exhibition contest against Fort Lewis in anticipation for the regular season.

Buddies gather to raise awareness about the disabled

More than 150 people gathered Thursday night to spread awareness and raise funds for Best Buddies, a nonprofit organization that fosters friendship between people with intellectual disabilities and non-disabled individuals. The organization, founded by Anthony Kennedy Shriver in 1989, also provides opportunities for employment.

Legislators question timing of U voucher report

The timing of a recent U report on school vouchers irritated some Utah lawmakers who said the release left the impression of being a political move to skew voters in the upcoming election. U recruits nanotechnology researchers

The U recently hired two prominent scientists in the field of nanotechnology as part of the state's new Utah Science Technology and Research initiative. Marc Porter from Arizona State University and Hamid Ghandehari from the University of Maryland start at the U within the next few weeks and bring with them research programs, private and public research funding and promising innovative technology for business commercialization in Utah.

Actors poke fun at racial slurs

After months of controversy, more than 1,400 people showed up to see "N*gger, Wetb*ck, Ch*nk: The Race Show," last Friday and Saturday nights at Kingsbury Hall. Although student ticket sales were up just days prior to the show, attendance was about 700 each night, short of the 800 tickets Kingsbury Hall was hoping to sell, said Sheri Jardine, a spokeswoman for Kingsbury Hall.
