As convincing as 2003 and 2004 were at the U, this is not a football school. Not really, anyway. Just as Keanu Reeves almost convinced everyone he was a good actor in "The Matrix," and Orenthal J. Simpson had a lot of people fooled into thinking he could be a productive member of society, 2003 and 2004 almost fooled U fans into thinking this was a football school.

Senate honors U Nobel winner

The United States Senate passed a resolution honoring U professor Mario Capecchi for his Nobel Prize-winning research on genetically altered mice Thursday. Utah Sens. Orrin Hatch and Bob Bennett sponsored the act to recognize Capecchi's research on mice that have been genetically altered, enabling scientists to study diseases in detail.

Concert to raise funds for art, humanities

More than 400 students flooded the Utah Museum of Fine Arts to celebrate the art of iconic American pop artist Andy Warhol on Wednesday. Students ate grilled cheese sandwiches with Campbell's brand tomato soup, watched a demonstration on making screen-print art and tried on "glam" clothing all in celebration of the Warhol Exhibit.

Bioneers conference offers sustainability solutions

A three-day conference featuring presentations about environmental restoration as well as biological and cultural diversity kicks off today at Westminster College. The gathering is the first annual Salt Lake version of the Bioneers Conference. The national group, founded in 1990, advocates for solutions to a variety of progressive issues.

Lisa Cohne was shocked when she discovered that Utah is the second driest state and one of the highest water users in the nation. Cohne, an instructional services specialist for Utah Education Network, is promoting an effort by the Water Wise Utah program for which she serves as manager.

Jazz beat 76ers in season tune-up

TCU was the overwhelming favorite to win the Mountain West Conference championship heading into the 2007 football season, but after seven games the Horned Frogs are just trying to stay out of the conference cellar. TCU began the season as the 19th ranked team in the country as it returned a host of starters and one of the best defenses in the country.

Letter: Chronicle contributes to societal decay

Editor: I listened to several speeches in front of the Union on Oct. 4 about the U's efforts toward environmental sustainability, and I was encouraged by what I heard. As someone who frequently commutes to campus by bike, I was also pleased to see a table for the U's Bike Collective, as well as a display of a plug-in electric car.
