Third-party candidates can be viable

By By Luke Hinz October 5, 2007
Fall Break is looming over our heads (I'm sure some of you already ditched out early, and I wish I was with you) and that means it's time for me to throw a party. But it seems that I'm not the only one wanting to start my own party. Last weekend, the Council for National Policy held a meeting in our city by the Great Salt Lake.

Ghosties and ghoulies and krakens, oh my!

By By Christie Franke October 5, 2007
A captain doomed to sail the seas for eternity seeking a woman to save him with her love. A romantic young woman who has heard all sorts of ghostly tales. A young man who would have the girl as his wife. Surprisingly, this is not "Pirates of the Caribbean.

RSL testing out its parts

By By Jon Gilbert October 5, 2007
Real Salt Lake shifted its playoff dreams for this season to next season on Sept. 29 when a 2-2 draw with the New York Red Bulls officially eliminated RSL from the 2007 postseason. Now, Real is mixing up its lineup and giving minutes to a slew of lesser-used players to find out who gives the club the best chance of winning next season.

Life of Brian: First big test since injury

By By Cody Brunner October 5, 2007
Any diehard Utah fan could tell that quarterback Brian Johnson still wasn't 100 percent when he played against Utah State. The junior threw two interceptions and offensive coordinator Andy Ludwig refused to send the dual-threat quarterback on any run plays.

Bring on the ‘A’ game

By By Jason Peterson October 5, 2007
Each week, Utah's secondary looks for an edge in order to slow down their opponents' passing game. Safeties Steve Tate and RJ Rice watch hours of film in hopes of predicting the quarterback's next move. Corners Brice McCain and Sean Smith study up on opposing receivers' running routes.

Young applauds U sustainability efforts

By By Rochelle McConkie October 5, 2007
Students who pushed for a greener campus received an answer from administrators -- the creation of the new Office of Sustainability. U President Michael Young formally announced the opening of the office at yesterday's Environmental Impact Day, calling it an "important milestone on campus" with the students as a "motivating, driving force.

Louisville Cardinals: from champs to chumps

By By Mandeep Gill October 5, 2007
Louisville football has used the last three seasons to build its national reputation. It took just five games for that reputation to vanish. Since 2004, the Cardinals have gone 32-5 and have become one of college football's elite programs. However, much of that had to do with current Atlanta Falcons and former Cardinal head coach Bobby Petrino and not with current Cardinal coach Steve Kragthorpe.

Heartbreaker edgy, yet sappy

By By C. Glen Bellamy October 5, 2007
Ben Stiller is not a leading man. I cannot emphasize that enough. Omnipotent forces beyond our control have been trying to sell us on the idea for a decade or so, and it's just not sticking. For him to be even remotely effective, he must be either in a supporting role ("Dodgeball," or as Tony Wonder in "Arrested Development") or paired with Owen Wilson ("Starsky and Hutch").

Sharpening the edge

By By Jon Gilbert October 5, 2007
When Utah defensive end Martail Burnett claims that snowmobiling sold him to come to the U, he is being facetious. A Los Angeles native, Burnett would probably be out of his element riding ski-clad motor vehicles through the snow-capped wilderness. Although Burnett can kid around about how ridiculous the idea of him snowmobiling is, it might have once been equally preposterous to imagine him leading the Mountain West Conference in sacks his senior year.

Game Guide: The Edge

By By Cody Brunner October 5, 2007
Quarterback The Utah offense received a huge shot in the arm last week with the return of Brian Johnson, but the junior still wasn't playing 100 percent. Offensive coordinator Andy Ludwig refused to call more than one option play, and Johnson threw a pair of interceptions.
