Anton "Tony" Rasmussen sat back and carefully eyed the 13-foot canvas in front of him in the Union Lobby. It was Sunday night and he had a couple of hours to finish painting. "No, it needs more," Rasmussen said. With the help of Ryck Luthi, a Union staff specialist, Rasmussen tipped the 8-by-13-foot painting vertically on a chair and without missing a beat, continued painting.

Research aims to squelch wildfires

U researchers are looking at ways to protect the state from future blazes after the largest wildfire Utahns have seen charred thousands of acres last July. Four U geographers have received more than $700,000 in grants to research wildfires and how people can better protect themselves in an emergency.

Rimando saving goals, face for RSL

In the midst of a constant downpour, Real Salt Lake's Nick Rimando peers out of his goal at the developing attack headed his way. Colorado's Jose Cancela sends a dangerous free kick to Rimando's left. The goalie leaps and blocks the shot. As soon as he recovers, climbing to his feet, Rimando dives back to the right to block Omar Cummings's shot off the rebound.

A world without hunger

As a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, I fast once a month. I hate being hungry, which makes going without food or water for 24 hours one of the hardest things for me. The first time I ever fasted, at the peak of my hunger, I thought of the starving children and people in the world and thought to myself, "No one should ever ever ever ever ever have to feel this way.

The mtn. network announced that it is expanding into more homes, but not quite to the extent most fans of Mountain West Conference teams would have liked to see. In a press release dated Sept. 20, the mtn. announced it would be expanding to three different markets in three different states, including Utah.

Sci-Fi fans flock to campus

If you think you know where Darth Vader is from, guess again. He's not from a galaxy far, far away -- he's British. David Prowse, originally from England, starred as Darth Vader in the first three Star Wars films. Prowse, along with nine other celebrities from the sci-fi world, were among the attractions at this year's Mountain-Con Science Fiction Celebration held on campus.

Gun advocates say they are not ‘nuts.’

The Second Amendment Students of Utah want to change what they call myths about firearms. "The biggest (misconception) is people who think that anyone who would like to have a gun is kind of nuts -- an unintelligent hillbilly," said Brent Tenney, president of the club.

Black fraternity plans campus return

A familiar fraternity is attempting to return to campus this semester. The historically black Omega Psi Phi fraternity, originally established at the U in the 1980s, disappeared from campus several years ago because of lack of interest among students. Professor William Smith has been working closely with U administrators to help bring the undergraduate chapter of Omega Psi Phi back to the U.

Grading: Social Work students have highest average GPA

Nestled between the massive bleachers of Rice-Eccles Stadium and the 12-story tower that houses the social and behavioral sciences, the small building that is home to the College of Social Work stands tall in academic achievement. The college had the highest average student GPA of any college on campus in 2006.
