Soccer survives rain, Huskies

By By Natalie Dicou September 24, 2007
The U women's soccer team battled an unrelenting downpour and the Washington Huskies on Saturday night, overcoming both obstacles in a come-from-behind 3-2 win. The Utes (5-2-1) gave up an early goal in the 11th minute when Washington defender Nikki Murray buried a shot into the upper left corner after the ball skipped through traffic on a corner kick.

Split personality

By By Natalie Dicou September 24, 2007
The U football team is an enigma wrapped in a mystery wrapped in a jock strap. This season has been a roller coaster ride -- a jerky, unpleasant one -- and I'm starting to feel nauseated. One minute, the Utes' offense is a well-tuned machine, its gears working together beautifully.

Community remembers J.D. Williams

September 24, 2007
Ted Wilson remembers the way J.D. Williams delighted in teaching all of his students to become politically engaged -- even Karl Rove. When Williams spoke of Rove, the former chief strategist for President George Bush, he would often say he taught Rove about politics, then he would get a glint in his eye and say, "but not his ethics." "J.D., above all things, wanted us to get involved in politics," said Wilson, a former mayor of Salt Lake City and past director of the U's Hinckley Institute of Politics.

Soldiers honored at ceremony

An 86-day forced march through Eastern Europe in the dead of winter is just one of the atrocities Richard W. Burt suffered at the hands of the German army in the waning days of World War II. "I weighed 141 pounds before I was captured...and 90 pounds when I was released," Burt said.

RSL takes second leg of Rocky Mountain Cup

An hour before kickoff Saturday night in Rice-Eccles Stadium, Kyle Brown's game plan got flipped upside down. With striker Fabian Espindola feeling pain in his groin, Brown received word from coach Jason Kreis that he would start. Brown adjusted accordingly.

Johnson’s efforts fall short

September 24, 2007
LAS VEGAS -- Doctors cleared Brian Johnson to play against UNLV. Kyle Whittingham didn't want to the chance if he didn't have to. After a scoreless first half, the Utes had no choice. In the end, it didn't matter either way. Despite getting their highly touted quarterback back, Johnson and the Utes could do no right and lost to UNLV, 27-0, to drop to 0-2 in the Mountain West Conference standings for the first time since 2002.

Backdoor amnesty at its worst

By By Tiara Fuller September 24, 2007
Am I alone in wondering what the heck is happening to our government? Don't we have a say anymore? America is a republic. We democratically elect officials to represent us. Increasingly, though, they are blatantly disregarding our wishes and best interests for persons that are not even citizens of our country.

Voices: Gear up for Homecoming Week

By By Nicole Nguyen September 24, 2007
Homecoming week is here! I believe that the significance of homecoming is to see organizations from all around campus come together this one time of year to celebrate and show that we are all true to U. Organizations including the Alumni Association, Athletics, Crimson Nights, the Associated Students of the University of Utah, the Residence Halls Association, the Bennion Community Service Center, Greek Row, the MUSS and even the Office of Orientation have been preparing all summer for the festivities about to take place.
