Wings of Blue’ drop into Rice-Eccles

By By Arthur Raymond September 10, 2007
A single, bright-yellow streamer fluttered atop an aluminum pole at midfield of Rice-Eccles Stadium on Friday afternoon. Air Force Cadet Kyle Sellner held the pole as he watched a twin-engine plane slowly circling overhead. Inside the DeHavilland UV-18B Twin Otter were four members of the United States Air Force Academy's "Wings of Blue" demonstration parachute team, preparing to exit the plane for a practice jump into the stadium from 4000 feet in the sky.

Utes stuffed short

By By Cody Brunner September 10, 2007
The Utes were so close to victory on Saturday night against Air Force, they could have reached out and touched it. That is, unless they were running the ball. Utah running backs Eddie Wide and Darryl Poston each had an opportunity from inside the one-yard line to keep the game alive late in the fourth quarter, but both were stuffed short of the goal line and the Falcons escaped Rice-Eccles Stadium with a 20-12 victory.

Volleyball team improves despite losses

September 10, 2007
The U volleyball team might not have collected wins against its arduous, pre-conference schedule, but the Utes are certainly improving because of it. The Utes dropped back-to-back 3-1 decisions to No. 4 USC and No. 6 Florida on Friday and Sunday, respectively.

Panel addresses myths about Muslims

By By Parker Williams September 10, 2007
Muslim students say there is no shortage of myths and misconceptions when it comes to Islam. Women are oppressed in Islam, all Muslims hate the West, Islam encourages terrorism and Muslims don't believe in Jesus were just some of the myths addressed during a panel discussion held last Wednesday in the Union Theater.

No. 4 USC topples U volleyball team 3-1 on Friday night

September 9, 2007
Another game against a top-ranked opponent resulted in another loss for the U volleyball team. But a defeat is far from the only think the Utes took away from their 3-1 loss to No. 4 USC. The Utes found out, with even greater conviction, that the 2007 version of the U volleyball team has the ability to beat good teams.

The Grady hunch

By By Mandeep Gill September 9, 2007
In the aftermath of the second consecutive opening-season loss and an injury to the star quarterback, the U football team is surrounded by a lot of questions. The Utes hope senior quarterback Tommy Grady has some of the answers. "The option element we have is going to be different with Tommy Grady at quarterback," said head coach Kyle Wittingham. "He has a great arm, great size and great poise. So we need to tailor the offense to his skill set." Although it has been well-publicized that quarterback Brian Johnson is one of the best players in the Mountain West Conference, the team expects Grady to effectively fill Johnson's shoes.

Bouncing back

By By Cody Brunner September 9, 2007
Prior to the 2007 football season, the Utah coaching staff catered the majority of its offense around junior quarterback Brian Johnson and his ability to run the football. Now that Johnson is out with an injured shoulder, those plans will have to drastically change if the Utes want to move the ball against Air Force tomorrow at Rice-Eccles Stadium.
