Giving it a Tri

By By Eric Williams September 11, 2007
The world famous Hawaiian Ironman Triathlon is comprised of a 2.4-mile swim in the open ocean, a 112-mile bike ride and a full 26.2-mile marathon run. I am no ironman. I don't know what metal to compare myself to, probably something more like copper or aluminum.

Professor says U.S. stirred up Iraqi divisions

September 11, 2007
A nationalist or pan-Arab movement among the various religious sects in Iraq had slowly been growing before the American invasion in 2003, said Peter Sluglett, a history professor at the U. "People gradually came to feel more conscious of their identity as 'Iraqis' than as 'Sunnis' and 'Shi'as,'" said Sluglett during a roundtable discussion on campus Saturday as part of the annual Middle East and Central Asia Politics, Economics and Society Conference.

Sounds from the sideline

September 11, 2007
Just two games into the season, the grumbling over offensive coordinator Andy Ludwig is getting louder. It's also getting personal. Moments after the Utes finished with their apathetic rendition of "Utah Man," Ludwig was the caboose of the trail of Utes making their way to the locker room.

Getting paid for making the grade

By By Lauren Mueller September 10, 2007
No one was more pleased than I when Miss Teen South Carolina's blundering video started circulating online last week. Because I am unemployed, YouTube is an invaluable part of my daily media consumption. And although the clip might not have featured some precocious little chipmunk or daredevil stunt gone awry, it was funny nonetheless.

University of Utah-St. George?

September 10, 2007
Dixie State College in southern Utah might soon become the University of Utah-St. George. The Dixie State Board of Trustees passed a resolution Friday announcing their plans to discuss becoming a satellite campus of the U. U administrators are considering the proposal but have not come to any conclusions.

Utes stuffed short

By By Cody Brunner September 10, 2007
The Utes were so close to victory on Saturday night against Air Force, they could have reached out and touched it. That is, unless they were running the ball. Utah running backs Eddie Wide and Darryl Poston each had an opportunity from inside the one-yard line to keep the game alive late in the fourth quarter, but both were stuffed short of the goal line and the Falcons escaped Rice-Eccles Stadium with a 20-12 victory.

Wings of Blue’ drop into Rice-Eccles

By By Arthur Raymond September 10, 2007
A single, bright-yellow streamer fluttered atop an aluminum pole at midfield of Rice-Eccles Stadium on Friday afternoon. Air Force Cadet Kyle Sellner held the pole as he watched a twin-engine plane slowly circling overhead. Inside the DeHavilland UV-18B Twin Otter were four members of the United States Air Force Academy's "Wings of Blue" demonstration parachute team, preparing to exit the plane for a practice jump into the stadium from 4000 feet in the sky.
