Letter: Fuller needs to do her research

August 23, 2007
Editor: I'm constantly shocked by the level of ignorance and poor excuses for arguments displayed by Tiara Fuller. In her article ("Poor people are milking the government dry," Aug. 20) she talks about people who are "'retired for life' at the age of 27" and accuses welfare recipients of being "a drain on society.

Letter: Student organizations do not discriminate

August 23, 2007
Editor: I would like to comment on Tiara Fuller's Aug. 1 column, "Clubs on campus are racist and divisive." First, Fuller states, "Going strictly by club names, white males are excluded from joining more than 35 clubs." I believe judging a book by its cover is the worst habit one can get into.

Taking literacy for granted: Pick up a book, people

As a child, books were my transport to another world. I could take myself into an adventure and live a life not my own for hours on end. They were an endless source of entertainment and education. In growing up, though, I found that when it came to competing with work, school, family and friends, books were left with none of my time.

Cultural buffet — on stage

"I don't want to give this one away," said acting professor Barbara Smith, director of the U theatre department's upcoming production of Euripides' Helen. "Unlike a lot of Greek scripts, this one's really plot-driven," she said. Based on Helen of Troy and with a translation by Kenneth McLeish, Euripides' Helen elaborates on a tale suggested by the lyric poet Stesichorus.

Blaqk Audio Cex Cells Interscope Three out of five stars The past few years have witnessed mobs of mascara-streaked, trust-funded hipsters stab the finer memories of '80s pop to death in their oft-dubbed "new wave revival." And it's clear that nothing from the new wave is half as brave or killer as the Depeche Mode tapes we all once snuck from our older sisters' ghetto blasters.

"September Dawn" Directed by Christopher Cain The architects of this last decade's Mormon Film Renaissance had to expect that eventually an equally zealous group of filmmakers would produce films with equally poor production values, equally poor acting and equally ham-fisted proselytizing agendas.

August 23 Holy ruby rock socks! Portugal. The Man is the resurrection of The Grateful Dead in 2007, a rock-and-roll sance no doubt enacted during one of its Alaskan homeland's month-long periods of darkness. Gourley's high-pitched croon is almost as delightful as that of The Mars Volta's wailer, Cedric Bixler-Zavala.

The money-driven fashion industry, with its unattainable ideal of beauty, often shuns or at least hides the imperfections of reality. Hidden beneath this tantalizing faade is what local photographer Capree Kimball calls a "terrible irony" -- an industry that places brutal restrictions on models and can be demeaning toward women.

Considerable risk is required in most life-altering ventures. Like Orson Welles' character states in "The Third Man," the milquetoast-neutrality of Switzerland has resulted in no cultural achievements in its 450-year history, outside the cuckoo clock. (Read: Safe bets aren't always the best.
