Online better than in line

By By Constance Yonashiro August 22, 2007
The traditionally long line to pay last-minute tuition in the Student Services Building might be shorter this year, as more students are opting to pay their bills online. "We're finding that it's becoming a turnover from everyone having to come to the window to pay tuition, to now more doing it online," said Steffany Forrest, assistant manager at Income Accounting.

Tuition remains relative bargain

August 22, 2007
While students often bemoan paying their tuition bills, undergraduate students at the U are paying less for school than their peers in most parts of the country. A full-time resident student at the U paid an average of $4,662 in tuition and fees in 2006, while the typical student at a public university was stuck with a $5,836 tab -- a difference of $1,174.

Student costs continue to rise

By By Parker Williams August 22, 2007
Before students begin to worry about homework, tests and term papers, there is another, perhaps more pressing, issue students must deal with -- tuition. According to statistics provided by the U, $142 million was earned from tuition and student fees during the 2005-2006 school year.

Letter: Where’s my club?

August 22, 2007
Editor: In response to Tiara C. Fuller's column ("Clubs on campus are racist and divisive," Aug. 1), I totally agree. Where are the clubs and get-togethers for whites, and how about white heteros? And no one of other ethnic groups or sexual persuasions can come to those! And how about a white hetero parade day? And how about a day for people who want normal sex? Just some good old kissing and in and out.

Tuition increase provides benefits

By By Rochelle McConkie August 22, 2007
Tuition rates aren't likely to decrease anytime soon, U administrators and state legislators said, but they are hopeful that an upward state economy will curb the yearly rise. "It's consistently going up," said Paul Brinkman, associate vice president for budget and planning at the U.

Letter: Unlike Fuller, clubs do good work

August 21, 2007
Editor: We wonder what purpose Tiara C. Fuller's opinion pieces serve, especially the one most recently published ("Clubs on campus are racist and devisive," Aug. 1). From personal experience, we know that several hundred people here at the U are working for greater social justice for people who have "disappeared" from public sight.

Activities: Free falling

By By Jessica Dunn August 21, 2007
What's on your list of things to do before you die? Are you making them happen? I checked one off recently. Maybe it's on your list, too. Skydiving. It's a true adrenaline rush. I've never felt anything like it. Specific details of my fall come and go, but most of it is still just a blur.

Find disrupts widely held scientific notions of evolution

By By Constance Yonashiro August 21, 2007
Fossils of two early human ancestors unveiled this month have prompted challenges to a popular notion of the evolutionary process of humans. Two U geologists helped date evidence near the fossils that suggests two species of early hominids co-existed for a longer period of time than previously thought.

Professor writes monologue on prostate cancer

By By Clayton Norlen August 21, 2007
Men aren't always the best when it comes to opening up, expressing their feelings or discussing the hurdles in their lives. Jeff Metcalf, a professor in the English department, doesn't have a problem opening up about his experience with prostate cancer. Metcalf kept daily journals as he battled the disease from diagnosis to beating the cancer.

Homeless men arrested at U

By By Ana Breton August 21, 2007
Two men were arrested and booked into jail on separate occasions earlier this month after police officers found them sleeping on-campus after hours. This is the first time a homeless person has been arrested on-campus this year. Prior instances when police officers found homeless people on-campus late at night only involved citations for trespassing.
