Poor people are milking the government dry

By By Tiara Fuller August 20, 2007
I hate the United States welfare program. Over the past couple of decades, the United States has spent billions of dollars-our hard-earned dollars-on entitlement programs that are ruining our country and doing little to actually reduce poverty. The U.S. has created a culture where living off government assistance has become the norm rather than a temporary relief for families going through hard times.

Men’s hoops closes Australia trip on high note

In 1997, Sheryl Crow came out with the single "A Change Would Do You Good." This song isn't likely a favorite of Runnin' Utes head coach Jim Boylen or any of his players, but the U men's basketball team has taken this notion to the extreme during the last two weeks.

Help the Peruvians after earthquake tragedy

By By Pamela Talledo August 20, 2007
One of the worst experiences I had ever had occurred on Aug.15 at 6:40 p.m.. I was back home in Peru visiting friends and family when a magnitude-eight earthquake hit. It lasted more than two minutes. I have heard about earthquakes but never had to live through one.

Letter: Fuller is a bigot

Editor: I definitely was aware of the level of racism and hate/ignorance circulating not only the U campus, but The Daily Utah Chronicle. To Tiara C. Fuller -- this writer is a very ignorant, uncultured and "threatened" "white girl" who has no depth of understanding the purpose of affirmative action.

The Salt Lake Tribune raised eyebrows recently when it published an editorial endorsing a candidate for mayor. Although the practice has precedent, some in the community have questioned its timing and purpose. The editor who invited me to write this column asked if endorsements pose ethical problems.

College is an excellent time to challenge our minds and learn about many different perspectives. The knowledge we gain here will be a valuable asset for the rest of our lives, and therefore should be the primary focus of the college experience. However, there is more value and knowledge that can be learned at college than only that which is taught in the classroom.

A new vision

August 16, 2007
From the moment Jim Boylen accepted the job as head coach of the U men's basketball program, he had one goal in mind: focusing on the team over the individual. "I want a team with some grit," Boylen said. "We need to become a team that trusts each other, cares for each other and one that believes in each other.

Surprise Party

By By Jon Gilbert August 16, 2007
When opportunity knocked, Robbie Findley answered. The forward welcomed a scoring chance without hesitation and ended the Houston Dynamo's 11-game unbeaten streak in the process. Findley celebrated his 22nd birthday in style with a game-winning strike, his second deciding goal of the season for Real Salt Lake, as the club shocked the Dynamo in Rice-Eccles Stadium with a 1-0 upset of the Western Conference leaders.
