Help the Peruvians after earthquake tragedy

One of the worst experiences I had ever had occurred on Aug.15 at 6:40 p.m.. I was back home in Peru visiting friends and family when a magnitude-eight earthquake hit. It lasted more than two minutes. I have heard about earthquakes but never had to live through one.

Fuller -- this writer is a very ignorant, uncultured and "threatened" "white girl" who has no depth of understanding the purpose of affirmative action.

Group appeals record denial

Former U student Katie Patterson is appealing the Utah Record Committee's decision to keep secret the identities of employees in the U's animal research lab. Patterson, a member of the animal-rights group Utah Primate Freedom Project, filed an appeal in the Utah 3rd District Court on July 30 hoping to overturn a decision issued by the committee to deny her access to the names and addresses of U researchers.

Research funds reach record high

U research brought in $322.6 million during the 2007 fiscal year, reaching a record high after a short decline in scientific funding in 2006. The amount represents an almost 9 percent boost in funding from the $296.7 million received for research, financial aid and fellowships during the previous fiscal year.

Field House goes techno

In an effort to increase student traffic, Campus Recreation administrators have installed flat screen TVs in the cardio area of the Field House. The four 52-inch TV sets are part of the improvements administrators added to provide students with better services.

Faust remembered

James Esdras Faust, Second Counselor in the First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, died at his home Aug. 10 at the age of 87. Although perhaps best known for his more than 30 years as a General Authority in the LDS Church, Faust was also a distinguished U alumnus.

Miner at U hospital

A rescue worker injured in last Thursday's mine collapse outside Huntington is currently being treated at the U hospital. On Friday, a spokesperson for the hospital reported the miner to be in fair condition. The hospital has not released any other information.
