Engineering a Way for U Students to Communicate

The Daily Utah Chronicle is a great little newspaper?just ask anyone who works here. But seriously, the Chrony published one news article in particular that caught my attention last week, and I haven't been able to shake the idea of it since. Apparently, the mechanical engineering department is attempting to implement a program that integrates communication skills into the hard science curriculum.

In a Dec. 5 article titled, "Database Helps With Cancer, Aging Research," The Chronicle misquoted Jean Wylie. Her final quote should have read, "When researchers ask Utahns to participate in a study, they don't have to explain why families are important." The Chronicle regrets the error.

Boy Kills Teacher in Alt. High School

SPRINGFIELD, Mass.?A 17 year-old student at an alternative high school stabbed a counselor to death Wednesday during an argument in a classroom, authorities said. The youth, identified as Corey Ramos, ran from the building and was arrested by police about a half-mile away, Hampden County prosecutor William Bennett said.

Utah State U. National Guard students help with Olympic security

LOGAN?Students from Utah State University who serve in the National Guard will be helping to make sure Utah is safe during the 2002 Olympic Winter Games. Although it is difficult to tell how many students serve in the Guard and how many will actually be called on active duty, the number is still high, said Terry Haslam, public affairs assistant for the Utah National Guard.

Police Get Absent Deportees’ Names

WASHINGTON?The names of more than 300,000 foreigners who disappeared after being ordered deported will be entered in a crime database so police can help track them down, the Immigration and Naturalization Service said Wednesday. By entering their names in the National Crime Information Center database, the missing deportees might be identified by officers in traffic stops or other identity checks, INS Commissioner James Ziglar told the House Government Reform subcommittee on criminal justice.

U Students Share Holiday Traditions

The snow is falling, holiday events are starting and families are beginning to gather together. It is the most wonderful time of the year?for family traditions. It's not traditions like arguing with siblings about who got the most presents, or fighting over who gets the wishbone, but traditions that families undertake each year in order to bond with one another and create memories that last a lifetime.
