A grand farewell

December 9, 2004
So long suckers, I'm outta here! No more East-Coast bias, liberal, opinionated rants coming from this space. From now on, The Chrony will be filling this space with psalms and pictures of flowers and babies to counteract all the angry, sacreligious remarks that have held sway over the past year and a half.

Rout to recovery

December 9, 2004
What a difference a couple of classifications make. The Utes, coming off an embarrassing 26-point rout at Utah State, were revived in a hurry, rolling to a 98-63 blowout of NAIA Montana-Western Wednesday night. Richard Chaney led the U with 20 points, as the Utes committed a season low eight turnovers.

Heisman Finalists

December 9, 2004
For a kid who was on the bench to start last season, Alex Smith has come a long way. The junior quarterback added to his legacy when he was named a Heisman Trophy finalist Wednesday afternoon. Smith is joined by Oklahoma quarterback Jason White, Oklahoma running back Adrian Peterson, USC quarterback Matt Leinart, and USC running back Reggie Bush.

The Chronicle’s View: Is 1984 your birth year or federal policy for Middle East Centers?

December 9, 2004
A set of lobbyists have succeeded in convincing the federal government to consider withholding funding from Middle East Centers in universities across the country. Their justification is that the centers' usefulness was tested and found lacking by their inability to predict the attacks of Sept.

Letter to the Editor: Leave former coach alone

December 9, 2004
Editor: Can't we give Urban Meyer a little slack? Was it best to handle things the way he did? Perhaps not, but would it have been better had he announced to his team and everyone else that he had taken the Florida job a month ago, or whenever the deal was done? They might not even be in the Fiesta Bowl right now if he had-it would have been a major distraction to the team.

Letter to the Editor: Kirk is a browbeating idiot

December 9, 2004
Editor: Responding to Kirk's counterpoint (Dec. 7's "If the Supreme Court had addressed gay marriage, what should they have decided?"), his points were so ripe with reason, so deliciously understanding of cultural evolution and basic human rights, how could anyone disagree? Now that he mentions it, of course I see that racism is an "invented bias" but homophobia is not, and "status quo rights" should stay put simply because they exist presently, and words like "sanctity" have some intrinsic value that corresponds to specific, real-world situations.

Letter to the Editor: Pittsburgh has tickets left

December 9, 2004
Editor: I am supplying a link for Utah fans to buy Fiesta Bowl tickets from the University of Pittsburgh. It might be a good idea for those who cannot get them from Utah. http://ev7.evenue.net/cgi-bin/ncommerce3/SEGetEventInfo?ticketCode=GS%3AP

ASUU looks to replace resigning cabinet members

By By Dave Salmon and Tyler Peterson December 9, 2004
The U's student government is working to finalize who will replace five resigning executive cabinet members before Winter Break begins. It is typical for the Associated Students of the U to lose a few members of its staff this time of year, who either decide to run in the upcoming year's student-body elections or to devote more time to school.

Letter to the Editor: Quit acting like a scorned lover

December 9, 2004
Editor: OK, so Urban isn't going to be around next year. Quit acting like a scorned lover and give the guy a break. Think about all the positive changes that have happened since he got here. In two short years, the MUSS is alive and strong, the U is a big name in the national poles and more people are aware of what we have known for a while, we have a pretty kick-ass school and football program.
