It’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s an angel: U department of theatre displays heavenly qualities in new play

March 2, 2005
The U's Theatre Department is taking on the brilliant and mammoth work of Tony Kushner's Angels in America: Millennium Approaches, being directed by Larry West and premiering in the Babcock Theatre tonight. The play brings into focus three unique relationships-that of Louis and Prior (a gay couple dealing with Prior's AIDS diagnosis), Harper and Joe (a Mormon couple that has to deal with Joe's homosexuality and Harper's depression) and finally the infamous Roy Cohn (a lawyer who died of AIDS in 1986 while still denying his own homosexuality).

Letter to the Editor: ‘Vendor’ argument for canceling poker tournament was lame

February 25, 2005
Editor: As I read the article about the cancellation of the poker tournament that was to be held last Tuesday on campus ("No Poker for U," Feb. 23), I kept asking myself, "What is ASUU afraid of?" I am not a poker player, nor do I endorse gambling, but there seems to be a deeper issue here.

Alumni honored for contributions to U, community

February 25, 2005
Anne Cullimore Decker has been on stage and in front of the camera more times than she can remember, but she still loves the thrill of acting. Her friends say she never takes an easy role, but she brings difficult parts to life as few others can. "When I am given a challenge, I will take it on, but I'm terrified.

Student court softens penalties levied to PINC Party after appeal

February 24, 2005
The ASUU Supreme Court affirmed the decision of the Elections Committee late Tuesday night, but softened the penalty levied on the People Incorporated Party for the posting of its Web site before Feb. 19. The court lowered the fine from $300 to $40. The court also allowed the party to post its Web site immediately rather than waiting until Feb.

Utes-At-A-Glance

February 23, 2005
Volleyball Ute coach Beth Launiere has named Mike Wall assistant coach. Wall will take over for Matt McShane, who took an assistant job at Cal. Wall comes from Saint Mary's College, where he was an assistant for the Gael team that went to the Sweet 16 in the 2004 NCAA tournament.

Smith named a Naismith Trophy finalist

February 23, 2005
The Utes' Kim Smith has added another accolade to her burgeoning trophy case. The two-time defending Mountain West Conference Player of the Year has been named one of 30 finalists for the Naismith Trophy, the most prestigious award in women's college basketball.

Letter to the Editor: Publicly funded elections is the solution to campaign extravagance

February 14, 2005
Editor: You're right. We don't "need our student fees being used to buy pancakes and bagels to get the word out about a party's platform." ("Don't show me the money," Feb. 9) That's because no part of the student fee is used for any candidate's campaign activity- as is the whole point of your editorial, all this money must be raised by the candidates themselves.

Love as a cowboy

February 14, 2005
Last Thursday I mustered the courage to do something I had never ever in a million years wanted to do. I went country dancing. It probably took more guts for me to perform this abhorred action than it took for Romeo to deny his father and refuse his name.

Outside the box: Parenting 101

February 10, 2005
The question of whether people are born with certain tendencies spawns another possibly unanswerable question: Are people born knowing how to be good parents? If you've watched TV at all during the past week, you're probably wondering the same thing. Trading Spouses juxtaposed a "wondermom" with one of the worst parents in the world, while Super Nanny provided us with images of 4-year-old twin girls calling their mom a "buttpie" and slapping her across the face while the dad watched helplessly.

Letter to the Editor: Chrony promotes juvenile delinquency with freestyle bike photo

February 2, 2005
Editor: Once again The Chronicle has published a picture of teenagers defacing the landscape of the U campus ("The air up there," picture in Feb. 1). No wonder the young man didn't want to give his real name; he was breaking a law the U has instigated for its own safety as well as the legitimate students and staff of the university.
