Who likes girl bands that offer more than just cheap thrills (such as making out with each other)? Who likes Boy Scouts, axe circles and the clove hitch? Who likes art/indie/grrrl rock band Boyskout? Another Life, Boyskout's sophomore release, delivers a compelling, albeit simplistic, 45 minutes of moody, moody music.

Affirmative action is racist

Editor: In response to Jay Richards' fallacious arguments ("Improve educational opportunities for all to promote equality: We need to expand, not contract, affirmative action," Feb. 28), it amazes me that Richards could use the terms "equality" and "affirmative ?action" in the same sentence.

If they’re really all idiots, why do we keep voting for them?

Every spring, it seems that at least one complaint is on everyone's mind: the Utah Legislative session. The jokes about our representatives' intelligence-or lack thereof-run rampant, as every year it seems as though the folks up on the hill seem to come up with an even more ridiculous idea than the year before.

UPC names new executive director

The Union Programming Council named Eric Hu as its new executive director Wednesday, March 1. The UPC is responsible for such events as Crimson Nights, Friday Night Live and Pazoovie nights. "UPC has found the key to success to break through the commuter mold on this campus, and I think it can continue to do so," Hu said.

Widening wisdom with the Web

Students may soon be paying private companies to take tests and quizzes. Publishing companies are offering more Web-assisted learning programs similar to WebCT to be used with textbooks. Some companies, such as Prentice Hall and its OneKey system, offer to lighten professors' loads by providing online tests, quizzes, reviews and exercises for classroom readings.

Editor: Ah, spring is in the air. As I look above me, the sky is blue. The temperature is a breezy 63 degrees, and I'm struck with the sense that life really isn't so bad. I enjoyed that feeling until-riiiip! Behind my study desk, a brigade of green-clad campaigners has set up shop to plaster the walls of the math center with litter.

Track takes sixth at MWC championships

The U track and field team finished sixth out of the nine teams competing to wrap up the indoor season last weekend at the Mountain West Conference Championships in Albuquerque, N.M. Junior Amanda Feigt once again stole the show for the Utes, as she broke Kristy Slade's 2002 school record in the pentathlon in the first day of competition.

This semester, Jason Durtschi is taking notes for more than just the midterm. Working with the Center for Disability Services, Durtschi, a graduate student in social work, is a note taker for U students with hearing or cognitive disabilities. The note-taking program is a service that helps students with documented disabilities receive the same educational opportunities by having student volunteers take notes for them.
