Mouse leads to death threat

After a mechanical engineering student reportedly made a death threat against a peer, administrators in the department stepped in and placed both students in counseling. Kent Udell, chair of the department of mechanical engineering, intervened after he was tipped that a student wanted to fight to the death, he said.

With help from students in the U's College of Fine Arts, first-graders at Newman Elementary School will begin learning ballet early next year. Across town, U students will help sixth-graders at Glendale Elementary to create a storyboard of their lives using film and photo.

Bennion Center turns 20

The Lowell Bennion Community Service Center is celebrating 20 years of service on campus by encouraging others to lend a hand. Over the next 20 weeks, the Bennion Center will be promoting service in the community and among students. The center released a handbook for the holidays to inform the public about convenient and easy service opportunities.

Religion class makes come back

Students interested in the effects religion has on society will be able to satisfy their curiosity in a new class. A class titled the sociology of religion was first offered in the 1980s, but it was cancelled after the instructor who created the course passed away.

Some advice for winter break travel

During Thanksgiving break I traveled to be with family, as I'm sure a good portion of students at the U and elsewhere did. As I witnessed, and am now trying to forget, students were far from the only people traveling. Flying is always a nightmare during the holidays.

U student bleeds blue

Not every University of Utah student bleeds red -- some bleed blue. Dan Whitaker, a junior in film studies at the U, has been a Brigham Young University fan since he could first talk and express his love for the team. Some of his fondest memories are of attending BYU football and basketball games with dad Tom Whitaker, a BYU alumnus.

U, BYU reach out to ethnic minorities

Although white students outnumber racial minorities more than three to one at the University of Utah and Brigham Young University, initiatives by both schools seek to bring more diversity into higher education. For more than 40 years, students and faculty at the Multicultural Students Center at BYU have worked to recruit students from local middle and high schools while providing scholarships and counseling for current students, said Lisa Muranaka, director of Multicultural Student Services at BYU.

Free Alta? Stop the segregation

At first glance, Alta Ski Area seems like a pretty friendly place. Its website claims "Alta Ski Area welcomes you," but Alta is segregating the world of winter sports, similar to the segregation by skin color some southern states employed until the 1960s. The website later states that "Alta is a skiers' mountain.

Warm weather pushes opening dates back

There is a rumor of an old man who has skied Alta Ski Area his entire life. People say he has figured out the Utah weather pattern for snow and he's almost always right. The old man believes that this pattern determines when the resorts will open. As far as this year is concerned, he's dead on.
