U, BYU reach out to ethnic minorities

By By Carlos Mayorga November 20, 2007
Although white students outnumber racial minorities more than three to one at the University of Utah and Brigham Young University, initiatives by both schools seek to bring more diversity into higher education. For more than 40 years, students and faculty at the Multicultural Students Center at BYU have worked to recruit students from local middle and high schools while providing scholarships and counseling for current students, said Lisa Muranaka, director of Multicultural Student Services at BYU.

Free Alta? Stop the segregation

By By Jessica Dunn November 20, 2007
At first glance, Alta Ski Area seems like a pretty friendly place. Its website claims "Alta Ski Area welcomes you," but Alta is segregating the world of winter sports, similar to the segregation by skin color some southern states employed until the 1960s. The website later states that "Alta is a skiers' mountain.

Warm weather pushes opening dates back

By By Jessica Dunn November 20, 2007
There is a rumor of an old man who has skied Alta Ski Area his entire life. People say he has figured out the Utah weather pattern for snow and he's almost always right. The old man believes that this pattern determines when the resorts will open. As far as this year is concerned, he's dead on.

Great Debate: Utah’s best better than BYU’s

By By Jon Gilbert November 20, 2007
OK, Cougar fans, you should take a seat. Get your tissues ready. You're about to get hit with an unsettling truth. Utah's surreal 2004 season was more impressive than BYU's 1984 national championship. Now stop yelling, take a deep breath and sit back down.

Security to be stringent

By By Eric Williams November 20, 2007
After driving only 45 minutes and playing in front of a crowd that's nearly 20 percent Utah fans, it's hard to call the Utes' biennial trip to Provo a real away game. Nonetheless, LaVell Edwards Stadium will feel a long way from home for the folks in red, both on the field and in the stands.

The traitor among us

By By Natalie Dicou November 20, 2007
Once Utah and BYU fans pick a side, they rarely waver. In fact, trading red for blue, or vice versa, is often seen as a shocking betrayal. But for Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham, the transition went surprisingly smoothly. "I was loyal to Utah the day I got here," Whittingham said.

Rivalry ranks high nationally

By By Jason Peterson November 20, 2007
Two years ago, The Wall Street Journal released its list of the 11 best college football rivalries in the nation. The renowned publication, although not typically known for its sports opinions, claimed these rankings were based on a formulaic approach that included margins of victory, lead changes, recent outcomes and overall quality of the rivalry.

Christmas shopping no excuse for debt

By By Nicholas Pappas November 19, 2007
It's midnight. Children lie in their beds and dream about their favorite things -- not moonbeams or kitten whiskers, but Xbox 360s, cell phones and Hannah Montana merchandise. Their mothers don't want to disappoint them. Christmas is a month away. Making sure their children aren't blue is worth going in the red.

Call to U: Make your voice heard

November 19, 2007
Often, I come across many people who want to tell me their feelings about The Daily Utah Chronicle and, more specifically, its opinion section's content. The reviews are often mixed and usually regard what people feel is inadequate coverage or diversity of opinion on a specific topic.

BYU: Killing for conservation

By By Lauren Mueller November 19, 2007
Admittedly, I'm not a vegetarian. I love animals and I'm currently housing scores of them, but I'm also a sucker for anything bacon-wrapped. Sure, it's a little hypocritical, but I'm hungry -- not bloodthirsty. I don't revel at the top of the food chain, draped in endangered pelts.
