BYU: Killing for conservation

By By Lauren Mueller November 19, 2007
Admittedly, I'm not a vegetarian. I love animals and I'm currently housing scores of them, but I'm also a sucker for anything bacon-wrapped. Sure, it's a little hypocritical, but I'm hungry -- not bloodthirsty. I don't revel at the top of the food chain, draped in endangered pelts.

The costume makes the man

By By Nicholas Pappas October 31, 2007
When I was young, my mother was Betsy Ross. She carried around a needle and thread like a seamstress vigilante. No rip or tatter was safe. This always helped at Halloween. If I asked to be a werewolf she could sew hairy legs onto a pair of cutoffs in minutes.

President Clinton to visit U

October 31, 2007
If U staffers get their way, Bill Clinton's upcoming appearance on campus will be more of a rally than a fund-raiser. The former president will visit the U to raise money for his wife's presidential campaign on Sunday at 3 p.m. Union Associate Director of Operations Brandon Dalley said Hillary Clinton's campaign chose the Union Ballroom over other Salt Lake City venues because they sought maximum political exposure, pointing to that night's $500-a-ticket fund-raiser in Park City as evidence that local demand far exceeds the U event's $50 price tag.

KUTE manager supports funding cut

December 7, 2006
KUTE station manager Alfred Quinn's stance on a bill to cut funding for the student radio has raised a few eyebrows. While other members of KUTE management have criticized the student government's proposal, Quinn has advocated the cut. The measure-which the U Board of Trustees will vote on the next week-calls for an amendment to Redbook, the student constitution, to allow the Associated Students of the University of Utah to suspend KUTE funding on a yearly basis.

Building careers

By By Paige Fieldsted December 6, 2006
It is not uncommon for Matthew Hintze and Michael Dolan to spend 12 to 18 hours a day in a design studio, but all their hard work has finally paid off. Hintze and Dolan, both second-year graduate students in the architecture program, recently placed first and second, respectively, at the Metal Construction Association's ninth annual student competition.

Stretch run breaks Trojans

By By Natalie Dicou December 5, 2006
The U women's basketball team withstood a late game USC rally and escaped with a thrilling four-point win over the Trojans on Monday night, running its winning streak to three straight and improving its record to 4-4. The Utes dominated both ends of the court in the first half.

Winter months mean dangerous conditions

By By Natalie Hale December 5, 2006
With the arrival of winter comes snow, freezing temperatures and dangerous ice-covered sidewalks and roads. And with the vastness of campus, chances are students are going to have to brave some ice and snow on the roads and sidewalks while the removal crews scurry to keep things safe.

Course evaluations make a difference

By By Matt Homer December 4, 2006
As the semester nears completion, it brings with it the opportunity to reflect on the past and plan for the future. Every student's mind is full of thoughts about the previous three-and-a-half months--confusing instructors, unfair exams and moments of epiphany and encouragement.

Throw in the red flag

November 29, 2006
In a recent episode of NBC's "Heroes," a man (Peter Petrelli) dashed into a violent encounter between a high school cheerleader (Claire Bennet) and her assailant. Heroically, Peter was able to hold off her would-be killer, which gave Claire time to escape.

Utes hope to keep momentum going against Weber State

By By Cody Brunner November 29, 2006
The Runnin' Utes should be pretty familiar with the opposition tonight when they take the floor against in-state rival Weber State. The Wildcats run an offense similar to the U's and have a recognizable face at the helm. Head coach Randy Rahe is in his first year at Weber State after spending the past two seasons under head coach Ray Giacoletti at Utah.
