One-sided rivalry: Red Rocks look to continue domination of BYU

February 11, 2005
BYU has never won a meet against the U gymnastics team in Salt Lake City. The last time the Y tasted victory at all against the Red Rocks was 1998 in Provo. The series record is in the U's favor at 73-2 and the Utes will go for their 74th win against their rivals Friday at the Huntsman Center.

The bigger they are, the harder they fall: Colorado State measures up in size in preparations for No. 15 Runnin’ Utes

February 11, 2005
The Colorado State men's basketball team is big. Not big in numbers and not big in wins, but the team is big. The Rams (9-12, 1-7 MWC) have three players that are 7 feet or taller. They also have a guy that measures in at 6 feet 10 inches. If any team in the conference can put a body or two on Utah's Andrew Bogut, it's the Rams.

The Chronicle’s View: What can ASUU do for you? Your taxes

February 10, 2005
The sentiments espoused in John F. Kennedy's inaugural address are inspiring, altruistic and patriotic. But sometimes it's OK to ask, "What does government do for me?" After all, we fund it. Our money is supposed to be used for our welfare. Questioning the value of its services has prompted great reforms, such as the case of our own American Revolution.

Road warriors: U women’s hoops heads to Wyoming

February 10, 2005
The U women's basketball team is in Laramie, Wyo. tonight for a 7 p.m. battle with conference foe Wyoming. The Utes (17-5, 6-1) are looking to remain tied atop the Mountain West Conference standings with the New Mexico Lobos while the Cowgirls (12-8, 3-4) look to continue the improvement they have demonstrated the last two years.

Desert sluggers: U softball heads to Las Vegas for a five-game tournament

February 10, 2005
The Ute softball team will try to build on its strong start in Las Vegas this weekend at the Louisville Slugger Desert Classic. Head coach Mona Stevens anticipates a more difficult time than last weekend, when the Utes easily disposed of Southern Utah and UVSC to go 3-0.

Chaos theory hurts Utah Jazz

February 10, 2005
After the first few Utah Jazz games, I was actually excited to be able to look forward to covering playoff games. Now that they have completely collapsed, I go to Jazz games and sit in the press room, watching TV until the game ends. The team sucks and it's tough to figure out exactly what happened.

Give me my money back: Symbolic legislation wastes time and taxpayers’ money

February 10, 2005
This semester I'm spending two days a week at the state Capitol for an internship with KUER public radio. A fellow U student asked me if the Legislature would give college students a fair shake, or cut funding once again. All I said was, "Duh." What do you think? While attending a committee meeting, I learned just how effectively (sarcasm) our lawmakers use their time.

Letter to the Editor: Contractual agreement rings true

February 10, 2005
Editor: I am writing to you just to say that Edward Stevenson's 'Dating contract' (Feb. 8) that I read in The Chronicle today was hilarious and so true. Daniel Timothy Sophomore, Business

Bookstore blues

January 25, 2005
Two competitors in the textbook industry can at least agree on one thing: textbooks cost too much. Junior Jeremy Christensen said that his books for one class this semester cost between $300 and $350. "I was like, 'Whoa, that's a lot of money,'" he said.

Message on a ballot
